As with so many people Pope Francis disliked and was mean to Opus Dei, demoted their status given them by JPII and never named the Archbishop of Los Angeles a Cardinal. He’s Opus Dei, heads the largest and most culturally inclusive archdiocese in the USA, about 5 million Catholics! But Francis named the Bishop of San Diego a Cardinal , not the Metropolitan Archbishop!!!
Maybe this is it: Francis had stripped Opus Dei, the Catholic organisation that includes lay and clerical members, of the management of its shrine in Torreciudad, which generates more than €1 million a year. A local bishop, Ángel Pérez, who opposed Opus Dei, has failed to secure an audience with Leo while the new pope has received Fernando Ocáriz, leader of Opus Dei, El Pais reported.
On Monday Pérez threatened to resign if he is forced to accept a deal presented by a Vatican mediator that the bishop claims favours Opus Dei.
Both the diocese and Opus Dei had requested it be designated an international shrine under the protectorate of the Vatican.
Opus Dei were meant to ratify their new statutes but keep delaying, more recently with the excuse of the Interregnum. I imagine Leo met with them to say no more dilly-dallying and get a move on!
