THIS IS A DARN GOOD PRE-VATICAN II HOMILY WORTHY OF THE REDEMPTORISTS AT THAT TIME! NO?

Being a Christian means battling the devil and striving for holiness each day.

“Jesus calls us to change our lives, change paths, calls us to conversion,”
There is no such thing as Christians who are resting easy, “who do not fight."

Conversion isn’t about superficial change, like applying makeup; it requires a change within that has been brought about by the Holy Ghost.

When Jesus tells his disciples in the day’s Gospel reading (Lk 12:49-53) that “I have come to set the earth on fire and how I wish it were already blazing,” he is speaking of a fire that requires that people change the way they think and feel.

“Your heart that was worldly, pagan, now becomes Christian with Christ’s strength,”  and the way one behaves also changes because conversion “involves everything - body and soul.”

“I have to do my part so that the Holy Spirit can act and this means a battle, to battle” and to make room for the Holy Spirit in one’s heart. That requires an examination of conscience every day and fighting against the various “diseases” the devil sows, “the diseases of worldliness.”

“Ask ourselves every day: how have I gone from worldliness, from sin to grace?” “Have I made room for the Holy Spirit so that he could act?

“Difficulties in our life are not resolved by watering down the truth. The truth is this: Jesus has brought fire and fights, what have I done?”

Those Christians who take it easy are “lukewarm” and their tranquility should not be confused with real inner peace that only the Holy Spirit can bring - “that peace for the soul that gives Christians strength."

Where did you get this from Fr? I’m a fan of the Redemptorists and St Alphonso’s Liguori, so much I hunted down paperback reproductions of The Ascetic works and own about 1/2 the collections.

It's Pope Francis homily for today's Mass!

Lots of platitudes and simplistic rubrics. Any Baptist or Methodist preacher has said the same many times. Yawn...

This homily will only be effective if some of the "diseases of worldliness" are called out by name. It is easy to tell others to examine their consciences, it is much harder to tell them that abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, and fornication are some of the many sins that need to be repented of. It's my guess that many folks probably thought that he was referring to their personal contributions to climate change.

I wonder sometimes what people think the purpose of a homily is.

And I think it is a good thing, not a bad one, that any Baptist or Methodist preacher could say the same things. That shows how Catholic they really are, despite themselves.

Carol, you are exactly right. Francis' comments were vague and empty of real content...it is what is between his lines that is the problem.

His Holiness Pope Francis has made it clear that within the Kingdom of God, sexual activity is proper only between a man and woman who are married to each other.

Pope Francis has condemned abortion. The same applies to homosexual unions. The same goes for euthanasia.

The only people who are unaware of Pope Francis' teachings in question are those who have not paid attention to the Pope's endless promotion of the Culture of Life.

Holy Francis says, "Difficulties in our life are not resolved by watering down the truth."

Like watering down the truth that one who finds him or herself in an adulterous relationship cannot receive Holy Communion?

That's the essense of Francis, stating the correct Cattholic position, while doing the exact opposite. That's how he convinces certain saps that he is orthodox

Surely no one thinks the Francis is orthodox. We’re all just supposed to pretend it doesn’t matter because he’s the pope.
