The last two Sundays of September and all the Sundays of October I will be celebrating two Sunday Masses at the Parris Island Marine Base, about 45 miles from Hilton Head Island. The first Mass will be in a large, very large, hall to accommodate the nearly 1,000 recruits who will attend Mass, most going through Marine Boot Camp. The photo is how the big hall is set up for Mass—kind of like putting lipstick on a pig, but it works!
The second Mass is at the Marine Base Chapel, a very nice chapel. If you look at the altar in the chapel, you will see that it is on a turn table, the entire wall with the crucifix and altar, actually turns around into the room behind it and what appears is the Protestant Chapel look with empty cross and pulpit. You can see that in the room on the other side. I’ve never seen that configuration before, but the chapel is used for both Catholic Mass and Protestant services.
