It was only a matter of time before they had to do this. It'll be interesting to see who they choose.

Sad, but understandable. They are still more Catholic than the "bishops" in Germany

True!

The new bishops will incur automatic excommunication and they’ll be back to square 1 before Benedict’s lifting of excommunication of the first batch of bishops. Maybe Leo will find a solution.

It doesn't seem that they're overly concerned with all that.

I pray Pope Leo, like Pope Benedict, will be a peacemaker. The fact is the Novus Bogus Church is on life support. We see it with our families and friends, all Church going Catholics at one time, who have simply walked away. The implementation of V II was a disaster of epic proportions, only the willfully blind refuse to see this, clinging to their fantasies of a "New Springtime" which never happened. I recall a Jewish educator saying in the 1960s that the vernacular was a mistake, that the religious vitality came from the Latin language. Pope John XXIIII certainly thought so when issuing Veterum Sapientia on the eve of the Council.

Cardinal Mueller identified the SSPX as schismatic.

Cardinal Burke declared that the SSPX has been "in schism since the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre ordained four bishops without the mandate of the Roman Pontiff."

"And so it is not legitimate to attend Mass or to receive the sacraments in a church that’s under the direction of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X."

=======

Will Pope Leo XIV throw in with the above school of thought?

After all, a Cardinal's mere opinion in regard to the SSPX, or...umm...supposed banal, fabricated liturgy...is final.

The SSPX refused full communion with Pope Benedict XVI as he demanded that to obtain such, the SSPX had to accept Vatican II, as well as declare that Rome's post-Vatican II liturgical reform was "good."

Good luck attempting to persuade the SSPX to agree to the above two demands in question.

Don Davide Pagliarani, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X:

"It is true that the Council does not only contain errors...What really made the Council, what was the backbone of the Council - the real Second Vatican Council - was the New Mass, ecumenism, the dignity of man and religious freedom.

"They were the essential elements and the errors that changed the Church.

"The real Second Vatican Council, it must be rejected. The Catholic Church cannot regenerate herself if it is not rejected.

"We have the experiment of Pope Benedict XVI and it cannot work: to put truth next to error; to put the two Masses next to each other, so that one can “fertilize” the other; to have “a reform of the reform through continuity”… it is a total illusion."

Pax.

Not good, according to the SSPX's viewpoint.

Father Davide Pagliarani's comments in regard to Pope Leo XIV:

"We wrote to the Holy Father to simply present the situation of the fraternity, explain its needs...So we wrote to the Holy Father to understand this very particular situation in which the fraternity finds itself, and to let him take the means to continue this work."

"Well, these reasons, unfortunately, do not seem interesting, are not convincing.

"Let's say these reasons have not found an open door at the Holy See for now.

"We regret it very much."

=======

To accept Father Pagliarani's take in question, then Pope Leo XIV has rejected the SSPX's attempts to legitimize the Society's present "situation," as well as the Society's "needs."

Pax.

I would love to ask Pope Leo this question: After reviewing the statistics contained in the Annuario Pontificio since 1965, when are you going to admit that Vatican II was an utter flop? Followed up by: haven't there been other Church Councils which were a flop? So why not cut your losses and change course? Have you considered revisiting Trent, a wildly successful Council?

TJM--exactly! All this pearl-clutching and, "Oh...Cardinal so and so said..." silliness is irrelevant. Pope Benedict, whose expertise and authority I trust more than 1000 Cardinal Burkes or Muellers (no disrespect to these men intended), lifted the excommunications, said they were invalid in the first place and also told us that the SSPX never WAS in schism. We, in our lifetime, have the privilege of navigating a Church that is in de facto schism with itself. The SSPX deserves our thanks for preserving what has been the ONLY type of Catholic worship that creates growth, while the decrepit gay men's club in their expensivce vestments continue to cling to the utter flop (and the misinterpretation of that utter flop) with every last bit of breath they can draw. The ape of the Church may own the cage, but the cage is falling apart. All the pearl-clutchers posting here with their self-righteous indignation need to ask themselves: Why such selective outrage? Why such selective tolerance. We've let China go down the toilet by recognizing their communist facade of Catholicism and we're offended by THIS? That only indicates the depth of the duplicity and hypocrisy that has overtaken the rulers of Christ's Church. They're days are numbered and they still can't figure it out. History is on the side of Tradition and Tradition will prevail.

The pope cannot come down hard on the SSPX while doing nothing to stop the German bishops. And if the pope does discipline the SSPX while ignoring the German bishops who said they are ordaining women, permitting gay marriage, allowing contraception etc, all bets are off. My guess is the Vatican won’t do anything. They won’t even acknowledge it. When does the modern Vatican ever correct error. My crystal ball says the chaos will continue and everyone in power will ignore it.

Love your accurate description of our aging clergy!

"...EXPENSIVE vestments..."
"...THEIR days are numbered..."
My typos and spelling errors are careless and inexcusable...unlike the CONTRIVED ERRORS that are being enforced by so many in the hierarchy.

I was an altar boy when the liturgical deforms started. I complained to a parish priest about them, and he said to me "why are you so focused on externals?" I replied, "well, I am not the one making changes to the externals, so who is the one focused on them?" He never engaged with me again on the subject. Checkmate!
