FATHER HANS KUNG, INCAPACITATED, UNABLE TO ATTEND GERIATRIC CONFERENCE IN DETROIT

Participants arriving at the conference:

Father Hans Kung and other guest speakers

Father Hans Kung could not attend a "catholic" conference in Detroit because of aging, declining health and approaching death. So he sent a video message, but forgot closed captioning for the hearing impaired and magnifying glasses for those who can't see. This his how the Detroit Free Press classified the conference:

Kung, who could not attend in person because of health reasons, was applauded by the audience, a mostly elderly crowd disappointed at what they see as the church’s rightward turn.

The National Catholic Reporter has an article on what Fr. Kung said as he called for rebellion, but peaceful, in the Church against the Holy Father, his arch nemesis, in academia and in the hierarchy. I wonder if he is jealous? PRESS THIS SENTENCE!

A great mind is a terrible thing to be wasting away!

Why are you so obsessed with the "grey hair" of the attendees at this conference? Aren't you in you late 50's, yourself? Have you seen the grey hairs at the local Altar Society meetings? At the Conclaves in the Vatican? Aren't they full of grey haired people?
Why do you so dislike older people? Don't they have brains? Actually, it is mostly older people who are active in today's Catholic Church, and young people don't really know or care very much about traditional church doctrine. The young couples I talk with pretty much pick and choose what doctrine elements they want to believe. Older people take the doctrine more seriously so they are the ones who raise questions. The younger ones just don't care, they do what they want!

Yes, I could be in that place as I was schooled in their theology-- aging, graying and wheel chairs is a metaphor for this theology of rupture which is really old now, decrepid and is dying. It is 1960's shallowness.

Pecano, It is not the grey hair per se that is the issue. It is the coincidence that all the "feel good" hippie theologians of the Church are aging and, possibly, will soon be made angels by Our Heavenly Father. I must confess that I often do not know whether I am rejoicing at their being (possibly) made angels or at their dying out. The aging parishioners to whom you refer are the faithful who have remained in the Church, despite Her various sorties into unbelief, praying for a return to sanity and tradition. The jury is still out on the younger crowd, but I like what I hear from them to this point.

Jody,

I am in my eighth decade, but my wife and I really have to go to the TLM to meet young folks, since the folks I see at daily OF Mass are mostly the same age as me.

As it happens, I am the one who counts heads at our Sunday TLM, and yesterday at least 75% were young folks, some college students but mostly young couples and lots of children and babies.

It's true that a majority of young people have been so poorly catechized that it's natural for them to leave the Church, but the best and brightest of young Catholics now are the best and most faithful in several generations.

This is 6r. McDonald posting from my blackberry. The second comment is mine but it doesn't indicate that. Thanks Henry for your comment and kind words at the PT blog--i find when young Catholics experience the truth they are on fire for more.
