I think this commentary is good, but at times Fr. Thomas Reese, SJ mixes apples and oranges.
But it is clear that the Second Vatican Council and all the popes since that time have been polarizing figures. The Catholic Church is clearly divided between heterodox and orthodox Catholics no matter their rank. In politics, it would be called conservative and liberal camps, with some in the middle leaning either way.
Thus the schism in the Church for the past 60 years is like a political system and it is ugly.
The mixing of apples and oranges comes with Reese’s false equivalencies. Previous popes have removed bishops because of heterodoxy. Francis comes across as removing bishops because they are orthodox and hold on to the Deposit of Faith. That may be a false narrative but if true, quite chilling.
No doubt though, both Strickland and Burke, to include Mueller and Schneider, have been poking the boss in the eye and most bosses, religious or secular, will eventually push back and eliminate the irritation!

The good news is that during the past 61 years, the majority of Catholics have loved and respected each Vatican II Era Pope. Those who claim to have been polarized were/are out of step with the overwhelming amount of God's Holy People.
