WILL POPE BENEDICT'S VISION FOR VATICAN II ONE DAY FIND A GRAND RENAISSANCE IN THE CHURCH, AND HIS VISION FOR THE LITURGY BASED UPON HIS MAGNIFICENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE COUNCIL??

Cardinal Sarah has given a very good interview at the National Catholic Register. Read the whole interview here.

Here is an excerpt of it:

Pope Francis, when he appointed me, gave me two instructions: first, to implement the Constitution on the Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council and second, to bring to life the liturgical legacy of Benedict XVI. I am firmly convinced that these two directives form a single direction. Indeed, Benedict XVI is certainly the one who understood Vatican II most deeply. Continuing the liturgical work of Benedict XVI is the best way to implement the true Council. Unfortunately, some ideologues want to set the pre-Council Church against the post-Council Church. They are dividers; they are doing the work of the devil. The Church is one, without rupture, without changing course, because her Founder “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Heb 13:8). She goes towards God, she directs us towards him. From the profession of faith of Saint Peter to Pope Francis through Vatican II, the Church turns us towards Christ.

Giving the liturgy its sacred character, leaving room for silence, and even celebrating at times towards the East, as Pope Francis did in the Sistine Chapel or at Loreto, is the profound and spiritual fulfillment of the Council.

My comments: Somehow, I sense that Pope Benedict's theology and Magisterium will see a revival in the near future. I could be wrong, but he is such a brilliant theologian and liturgist. I believe his papal magisterium will rule the day, some day.

I totally agree with that assessment. It MUST rule, somehwere, or the Church will be at an end, and which we know cannot happen worldwide.

That does NOT mean it cannot end in the West or the USA, but SOMEwhere it will drive on, faithfully proclaiming the Truth as it heard it from its founder. Without that sacred silence, God cannot be heard over the din we make ourselves to fill that emptiness we all feel minus God.

Father McDonald,

You may be correct in your vision, because the young pastor I have, and some others I have seen, are doing precisely what Pope Benedict advocated. The old double-knit dinosaurs who have presided over failure will soon go to their reward and can do no further harm. SS, as implemented, has been an utter failure, and only the more delusional can point to it as a success (unless draining the pews is considered success).

Cardinal Sarah has, once again, made it clear that Pope Francis and he enjoyed a peaceful, productive relationship with each other.

The right-wing lied repeatedly about Pope Francis having despised supposedly, as well as opposed, Cardinal Sarah.

The left-wing lied repeatedly about Cardinal Sarah having opposed supposedly Pope Francis.

The liars in question should apologize for their having defamed Pope Francis, as well as Cardinal Sarah.

Ed Pentin: "How was working with Pope Francis? Were there not difficulties?"

Cardinal Sarah: "Some people insinuate without reason or even being able to provide concrete and credible proof that we were enemies, it’s not true!

Pope Francis likes frankness. We have always worked together with simplicity, despite the fantasies of journalists.

For example, Pope Francis understood very well and received the book for which I had collaborated with Benedict XVI, From the Depths of Our Hearts.

I did not hide from him my concern about the ecclesiological consequences of questioning the celibacy of priests.

When he received me after its publication, when press campaigns accused me of lying, he supported and encouraged me."

Pax.

MT,

LOL - hey when is Pope Francis going to discipline the Vatican clergy involved in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy?

Right-wing, Pope Francis-hating blogosphere folks promoted the following lies in regard to, "From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy and the Crisis of the Catholic Church," by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Robert Cardinal Sarah.

-- Said book constituted opposition to Pope Francis.

-- Pope Francis had flown into a supposed rage in regard to said book.

Left-wing, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, as well as Cardinal Sarah haters, insisted that the book constituted disloyalty to Pope Francis.

Cardinal Sarah: "For example, Pope Francis understood very well and received the book for which I had collaborated with Benedict XVI, From the Depths of Our Hearts. I did not hide from him my concern about the ecclesiological consequences of questioning the celibacy of priests.

I think that Benedict's approach is winning the day. Just last December Pope Francis reaffirmed Benedict's hermeneutic of reform in continuity approach in his address to the Roman Curia.

The problem is that Benedict is more nuanced and moderate than many right-wing American Catholics appreciate. For example, how many traditionalists actually agree with Benedict's judgment in Summorum Pontificum that the 1962 missal and the 1969 missal are two legitimate forms of the same Roman Rite and embody the same lex orandi?

Sorry, it was Matteo Matzuzzi, not Ed Pentin, who conducted the interview.

John, despite some problems in Pope Benedict’s declaration, it opened the door wider to those who desire the EF Mass because it placed the EF Mass on an even par with the Ordinary Form. Keep in mind, it is precisely the progressives in the Church who believe it to be second rate and abrogated by Paul VI. Benedict took the wind out of their sails. It is important to remind progressives who have an antipathy for the EF Mass, that it is one of the two expressions of the Latin Rite Mass.

Thus, as a progressive, I agree with Pope Benedict’s description of the two forms of the one Latin Rite.

Pope Emeritus is a self-described "progressive."

In recent years, in regard to their deep hatred of Pope Francis, many right-wingers attempted to weaponize Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI against Pope Francis.

That is, when they pitted Emeritus against Pope Francis, said folks portrayed Cardinal/Pope Ratzinger as a staunch right-wing traditionalist whose Pontificate and teachings differed radically from that of "modernist" "Bergoglio."

But the not-so-secret...little secret... is that in regard to one issue after another, the right-wing stands in fierce opposition to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

The right-wing stands in fierce opposition to the following...which Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, just as fiercely, supports:

-- Novus Ordo and TLM are two forms of the one Roman Rite.

-- Vatican II is in line with Holy Tradition...and has blessed the Church.

-- Mass of Pope Saint Paul VI.

-- Praised Martin Luther

-- Unrelenting support given to the Ecumenical Movement.

-- Interreligious "dialogue."

-- Assisi gatherings.

-- At Assisi III, Pope Benedict XVI permitted a voodoo witch doctor to chant a prayer to a strange god.

-- United Nations.

-- "Tree-hugging" environmental issues.

-- Declared that climate change is real.

-- Pope Benedict XVI worshiped at Rome's Lutheran church.

-- Prayed at a synagogue and mosque.

-- Had cast aside the ancient Good Friday prayer for Jews.

-- Has praised Pope Francis' Pontificate.

-- Has insisted that his former Pontificate and Pope Francis' Pontificate are in continuity with each other.

-- Appointed "modernist" bishops.

Pax.

Benedict created a false wind and a false sail by declaring there to be "two forms of one rite." As John Nolan has noted, this is fiction.

You can pretend with Benedict and stand by your Great Gatsby, your Name of the Rose, your Mrs. Dalloway (all fiction) till the cows come home. It doesn't change the unreality.

I think Pope Benedict felt he had to respect the NO to prevent resurrection of the EF from causing schism.

Anonymous at 8:12 AM,

I agree with John Nolan and you that it is a fiction, but it is the practical result that is important. In my immediate area of my diocese all 3 of the local pastors who are Diocesan priests all wear the cassock and say the EF once a week at least. So that fiction has produced tangible results. That genie is not going back into the bottle

Mark Thomas,

You are beyond tiresome.

The so-called "right-wing" does not support abortion, gay marriage, or transgender issues, but the leftwing does. Ergo, if you are part of the leftwing, you have ceased to be Catholic.

You continue to avoid the big issue: what has Pope Francis done to discipline the clergy in the Vatican who engaged in a cocaine fueled, gay sex orgy? Until you can answer that, maybe you should quit posting your cut and paste tripe.

John Nolan said...

The importance of Summorum Pontificum is not that it created 'two forms' but that it underscored an important principle, viz. that the Church does not suppress, and never has suppressed, rites which are orthodox and legitimate; and that a pope, even with the backing of a general Council, cannot do what he wants with the liturgy. Benedict dates the latter from Vatican II but it goes back to the beginning of the 20th century.

Paul VI inherited a very recent tradition of liturgical micro-management which culminated in his Novus Ordo Missae. The irony was that his new Mass was subject to so many variants as hardly to constitute a stable rite.

Already, few traditionally-minded and liturgically aware Catholics would want to resurrect the post-1955 Ordo for Holy Week, and so the traditional rites are increasingly celebrated.

Things have moved on, and the assumptions of 1955 and 1970 are no longer valid or relevant.

John Nolan,

Ironically the Church was in very good shape prior to the Council, if we compare it to the present day. Tinkering with the Liturgy was a luxury for the bored clerics at that time who had nothing better to do to fill their time.
