Of course when you get to Vienna, you must pronounce it as the natives do, with a long “eye”, Viiiiiena! Odd, though, that they went to London but not Birmingham....
Wel, don't stop there! Come on up to Russia (ROO-shee), Peru (Pay-Roo), and Versailles (Vur-Sails). We also have the Conventionally named but unconventionally placed South Charleston, which is south only of Canada.
Next time he passes thru Georgia, he needs to go to Brunswick, "our" Athens and Manchester! And he can add a piece of Africa by going thru Cairo (pronounced 'Kay-ROW" along Hwy. 84 in south Georgia and add a part of Asia by passing thru Canton in the Atlanta area's Cherokee County.
The distance of the COVID road trip of Lisbon Florida to Frankfurt Kentucky is 1,248 miles vs. Lisbon,Portugal to Frankfurt Germany 1,430 miles. Not that far off although making the latter trip one would certainly not pass through Athens ,Dublin, Rome, Florence, nor London. Vienna would be a detour but could be included
In North Yorkshire there is a tiny hamlet called New York, named after a linen mill set up on the river Nidd in 1814.
In Pennsylvania York and Lancaster are closer together than they are in England.
Pronunciation of English place names is not just confusing to foreigners. Wymondham in Leicestershire is pronounced more or less as it is spelt, whereas Wymondham in Norfolk is pronounced Wind'm.
And Welsh place names were devised by the natives with the sole purpose of confusing the English.
Fr. Allan J. McDonald said..."Or, in Georgia, they can visit the town of Santa Claus to mail their Christmas cards which is on the way to Climax before reaching Glory, Ga."
