President Obama is openly challenging the leadership of the Church through the surrogates of Pelosi, Sebelius, Cuomo, et al. This is a page from the Chinese 'catholic' church where alternative leadership, faithful first to the political leaders, is established. AB Dolan is more than smart enough to spot this, but is playing the passionate syllogism that Obama 'seemed' sincere when they met and leading us to understand the cynical nature of the President. It is, however, an interesting display of weakness for Obama to give Catholics a year to figure out how to betray our conscience. This means he is wiling to do the same for his 'beliefs' and is vulnerable to manipulation, that will sell out his supporters to suit himself. As the joke says, we have agreed on what he is, we are now just haggling price.
I agree with your analysis, rcg. The only surprise here, really, is that AB Dolan is surprised. What Obama has now done is entirely consistent with his larger pattern of behavior. He is anti-church, pro-abortion, and deeply committed to the destruction of our Republic.
William, I think Tim Dolan would grab Barry by the ear and tell the err of his ways in no uncertain terms. AB Dolan is leading us through the forest to see for ourselves what he saw the first time he set eyes on President Obama.
Courageous man, that ABshp! We must pray for all our Catholic leadership to show the same courage, fidelity and wisdom (and to bear the predictable consequences!).
rcg, I would love to see that! Barry is a bad boy, one who has yet to put away childish things. One of the errors in play right now is that so many are dealing with him in adult terms.
Abortion (and by extension abortifacient birth control) is by far the greatest of the Democratic party's sacred cows. Institutionally, the Catholic Church is the greatest obstacle to this mindset (or at least it is nominally, if you ignore American dissent and rampant noncompliance, abetted by two generations of modernist and spineless bishops). It is not enough for the feminists and the Party to force Catholics to live in a society where these things are classed as fundamental rights and where dissenters must acquiesce in them. Their campaign will not be complete until dissenters must actively assist in them, at least economically. Textual rights such as free speech (use of RICO against pro-life protesters) and free exercise (the new HHS rulings) must fall before this goal, as do conscience rights (forcing pro-life pharmacists to prescribe the Pill). In their unreasoning rage, they will stop at nothing to promote this so-called right.
The bishops will now cook up some half-baked "compromise" (which will of course mean the compromising of the principles of the faith) which will in actuality mean that the Church will give up still more ground. They will militantly refuse to see that any compromise at all is a victory for the administration and a defeat for the Church.
This persecution will never stop until the Church draws a line in the sand. Thus far it has refused to do so, and there are no indications that it will.
When you compromise with evil this way, it ends with your own destruction.
I am the youngest son of a Canadian father and Italian mother. My father was from Judique, Cape Breton and my mother is from Livorno, Italy. After my father became a naturalized citizen of the USA he was drafted into the army and sent overseas for World War II. After the war, he married his war bride, Isolina Clara Sainati of Livorno, Italia on December 1, 1945. I was born in Napoli, Italia on December 21, 1953. We moved to Georgia when I was 3 years old. We lived in Atlanta from 1957 to 1960 and in Augusta. My mom is still in Augusta. I went to St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore. I was ordained a priest on June 7, 1980. I have served in St. Teresa Church, Albany (1980-85), Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah (1985-91). I was pastor of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta from June of 1991 to July of 2004. I am currently pastor of St. Joseph Church, Macon since 2004. I was the vocation director for the diocese from 1986 to 1998 and Diocesan Master of Ceremonies and Director of Liturgy from 1985 through 1991. I was vicar forane of the Augusta deanery from 1991 to 2000.
