If Episcopalians know this, why don’t Catholics??? Especially Catholic bishops and priests???
Once again Pope Leo has requested that the post-Vatican II Bugnini Mass be celebrated properly. This is what His Holiness said at Vespers at Notre Dame Cathedral (for those who don’t understand French, that is Our Lady’s Cathedral):
To you who celebrate the Eucharist each day, I ask you to ensure that the liturgical celebrations are always carried out with dignity and reverence, even where smaller communities gather. Be conscious heirs of the Church Fathers and saints who, over the centuries, have handed down to us the profound meaning and beauty of the liturgy, always giving an example of great humility before the Mystery that is celebrated.
This is how I interpret Pope Leo’s multiple requests for properly celebrated post-Vatican II Bugnini Masses:
1. Read the black and do the red!
2. Make sure the propers are not substituted with someone’s so-called better choice and that the Propers are chanted beautifully in Latin from the Roman Gradual!
3. Use the Jubialtio Deo Mass settings for the Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.
4. The celebrant chants the parts proper to him
5. Lay Lectors are steeped in how to read the Scriptures at Mass while wearing their Sunday Best as understood in the 1950’s. Coat and tie for men and very modest dresses for women with below the knee hems and fully covered shoulders and arms. In lieu of risking various styles that may not exude Catholic modesty, a beautiful white alb for men and women is recommended.
6. Only trained and formally installed Acolytes may assist the priest as “extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion” using the proper liturgical garb , alb or cassock and surplice, for this ministry.
7. Holy Communion distributed to kneeling communicants.
8. If the Precious Blood is included in distributing the One Lord, it is done by intinction by the Eucharistic Minister as described in the General Instructions of the Roman Missal.
9. The sanctuary is to be arranged and decorated with noble simplicity with the so-called Benedictine altar arrangement for Mass facing in whatever direction, the east or liturgical east preferably. No floral arrangements in front of the altar, ambo and celebrant’s chair!
10. Special attention is given to proper liturgical chant and instrumentation using the organ as the primary liturgical instrument and also including chanting without instrumentation. Piano, drums and guitar should be excluded but classical acoustical guitars and strings allowed but sober in instrumentation.
