The first two photos of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Modesto, California show-case a very simple church, quite beautiful in its simplicity and pre-Vatican II form, noble simplicity and unity.
The third photo is a wreckovation of the same church. Please note how its original unity is destroyed, as well as its classic simplicity.
I would say that it was this sort of thing that drove Catholics away from the modern Mass and the churches retrofitted for it and in droves!

First two pictures present a nice example of midcentury modern architecture (for lack of a better term), with clean lines and pleasant symmetry. Picture 3 presents formless, off-putting dreck. Agreed on your last point, Padre, though I'd argue it wasn't just changes to architecture and furnishings.

I think that if the new and improved Mass had been celebrated in churches that maintained the ethos of the pre-Vatican II sensibilities about the altar, altar railing and kneeling for Holy Communion, the loss of Catholics would have been lessened. If things had been done in continuity with what had preceded, we would not be in as big of a mess as we are now. But, God is the Head of the Church and He will restore all things in Himself, in His time, not ours as His time is eternal.
