For whatever reason, and I think it was to retire the kneeler that Pope Benedict used to distribute Holy Communion and not draw attention to how the pope distributes Holy Communion, Pope Francis never distributed Holy Communion to the laity at papal Masses, unless it was a Mass where the laity were baptized and confirmed or children making their First Holy Communion.
On Sunday, October 5th, Pope Leo XIV binated at two outdoor Masses at the Vatican. The second was a small gathering at the Vatican’s Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto for the Gendarmerie Corps. The first one was the Jubilee Mass for Missionaries in Saint Peter’s Square, with crowds never seen at Pope Francis’ outdoor Masses, especially in the last few years.

I would recommend to Pope Leo that he gradually do this at all His Holiness’ Papal Masses, and bring back the kneeler, but please note that a paten held by the MC is placed under the chin of the communicant to catch a falling Host or any of the Particles of Holy Communion, Kudos!!!!

Use of the Communion paten (or "Communion plate") in the Novus Ordo is simply following the rubrics, nothing more or less. Is it surprising that so many people ignore, or are simply completely unaware of, the Church's direction on this practice? Absolutely not.
