Unfortunately, my current parish carries on the silly, extra-rubrical "custom" of the congregation reading the crowd parts. Most (though not all) of the congregation spent the entire Passion with their noses in the cheap yearly missals we have hunting for their next speaking part. Query: if we found different pew missals without the bolded text asserting that's where the congregation joins in, what would the people do?
When asked by our choir director if we could chant the Passion, our pastor, who admittedly doesn't have a strong singing voice, said, "Why would we do that?"
It happened yesterday (Palm Sunday A.D. 2025} at the 1030 High Novus Ordo Mass at the Catholic Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta, Georgia USA.
