TO WEAR THE MOZZETTA OR NOT TO WEAR THE MOZZETTA, THAT IS THE QUESTION AND THE ANSWER WILL SAY A LOT, I MEAN A LOT!!!!

When Pope Francis, in the most humble and visible way possible, broke the tradition of wearing the papal Mozzetta when His Holiness greeted the throngs of pilgrims for the first time in Saint Peter’s Square, most  did not appreciate the humbleness of this act of simplicity and a stripped down papacy, from a Mercedes to a tiny two cylinder Fiat.

Now we know.

What the pope wears when we see him for the first time will tell us much too. UGH!

From the room of tears, we see that there is a Mozzetta for the new pope to wear, if His Humbleness chooses to wear it. Will he? That is the question!

To accept the state of one's office seems to be the more fitting humility. I would not think a judge who takes the bench without his robes, or a CO who takes command without his uniform, was any better for it. Frankly, I would suspect the worse.

Once JPI got rid of the Tiara, it was gone. Now the Mozetta, Apostolic Palace and reasonable and appropriate auto transport has been thrown overboard. It indeed will be interesting to see not only who, but how our next Holy Father walks out onto the balcony.

Compromise from second number 1 is indicative of many more to come.

Now, a pontiff's value will be determined by his humbleness, real or perceived.

Let us hope a papal track suit does not become the next means of virtue signaling.

But, but, don't let clothes distract from the message. How could they not while sending their own message?

The robes and regalia worn by judges in the US is a far, far cry from those worn in the Mother Country. We've given up wigs, we've jettisoned the various colors of facing on the robes, gone is the gold edging (Chief Justice Rehnquist's sleeve stripes notwithstanding, gone is the scarlet hood, etc.

But, know what? The law is still the law.

I knew at that moment what was to come; you could see it on Msgr. Guido's face.

I think it was Pope Paul VI that sold off the papal tiara.

K never disappoints with his off base comments! Strange that women’s religious orders where the full habit is worn are growing and the average ages far younger whereas the pant suited ones are dying.

"But, know what? The law is still the law."

I'm astonished you would say that, given the current state of the judiciary.

I suppose, by analogy, one could say "The Mass is still the Mass," whenever a priest celebrates in street clothes and a stole. Thankfully, that abuse has all but disappeared, as there has been an acknowledgment that casting aside robes and regalia does have an effect, even if the Mass is still the Mass.

"appropriate auto transport has been thrown overboard"

You mean an older model of a Dodge RAM pickup (which surely are many in Europe, right?) isn't the best choice for processing a pope's casket?

Why is it that liberal Catholics always have a problem with all the “trappings” of Catholicism. Things like a Mozzetta that have always been normal for popes and bishops to wear are suddenly treated as garbage from the past to be discarded. What’s wrong with a pope looking like a pope. I remember as a child seeing the popes carried on the sedia and never thought anything was wrong with it. He is the pope and that’s what’s done. And look at the Orthodox bishops. They dress much much more elaborately than Catholics bishops ever did. They all wear jewel encrusted crowns. But nobody has a problem with that. Why. Because that’s part of their tradition. We have thrown almost all of our Catholicity into the dust bin and for what. The ordinary everyday Catholic before Vatican II never had a problem with the Latin Mass or with nuns in long habits or priests in cassocks. Liberals did. So it had to be changed. And after that was done they went after the beliefs and doctrines of the Church. If it’s wrong to go back to the 1950’s then it’s equally wrong to go back to the year 33 A.D. I don’t want a pope who looks sloppy like Francis did. I want a pope who embraces the papacy with some dignity. I want beauty back and clear teaching and yes I want a pope to act like a pope and also to look like a pope.

Tm,

You make many excellent observations but your most compelling one if it is wrong to go back to the -1950s then it is equally wrong to go back to 33 AD. You just crushed the faux Liturgical establishment with that one and it is in line with Piux XII’s thinking in Mediator Dei.

The judiciary is still the judiciary, despite the false claims, the calumny, the slander levelled against it by the Cult47 crowd. It is that cult crowd that is attempting to discredit the judiciary, calling the judges who decide against Trump "deranged." AG Bondi: "What has happened to our judiciary is beyond me. [The judges are] deranged is all I can think of. I think some of these judges think that they are beyond and above the law. They are not, and we are sending a very strong message today. If you are harboring a fugitive, we don’t care who you are… we will come after you and we will prosecute you. We will find you."

She's dangerous and must be stopped.

I had to laugh at our resident “legal expert’s” K’s unhinged rank where he displays his abysmal ignorance of the law and reality. It is his Party which flouts the rule of law: jailing Catholic grandmas protesting outside of abortion clinics, investigating parents as domestic terrorists for questioning loco school boards decisions, Latin Mass Catholics, and the ultimate in election interference, conducting lawfare against ones political opponents as they do in third world banana republics. You have finally exposed yourself to be the unhinged leftwing ideologue and fraudster many of us suspected. Remember, no one is above the law, including judges who commit felonies, for violating US Immigration laws.

Jonathan Turley, premier constitutional scholar, would disagree with you. Maybe if K read his daily blog, Res Ipsa Loquitur, he would know how far off base he is. But he won’t because he is the MT Suit of the clergy!

Tm - I have no trouble with the "trappings of Catholicism." What I don't cotton to are the "trappings" the Church has borrowed from royal courts such as ring kissing, calling cardinals "princes" of the Church, ultra-fancy automobiles, palaces, tiaras, etc. What I also don't cotton to are Catholics who pretend that these royal court accoutrements are somehow essential or part of our Tradition or that they have "always" been used. The pope didn't start wearing white until the 1500s.

Fr. Michael J. Kavanaugh said...

TJM - I'll see your Turley and raise you one Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts. "Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts doubled down on his response to critics calling for the impeachment of judges whose decisions they disagree with. Roberts staunchly defended the independence of the judiciary in a Wednesday night fireside chat in Buffalo, New York, as the Trump administration continues to clash with numerous judges who do not rule in its favor. “In our constitution, the judiciary is a coequal branch of government, separate from the others, with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law and strike down acts of Congress or acts of the president,” he said. “And that innovation doesn’t work if the judiciary is not independent. Its job is to, obviously, decide cases, but in the course of that, check the excesses of Congress or of the executive, and that does require a degree of independence,” he added, drawing applause from the crowd.

As for the law, TJM folds.

MT Kavanaugh,

Roberts lacks the intellectual gravitas of Turley and ultimately Roberts will either rein in these leftwing loon tyrants in robes or be responsible for irreparably damaging the Court. Keep in your little mind that Roberts has ZERO enforcement power and is dependent on the Executive Branch to enforce its edicts. If the Court goes too far in treading on the Executive's Article II powers, it would the President's constitutional duty to ignore the Court.

There are 3 co-equal branches, not a super branch which controls the other 2. If you think a district court judge can issue nationwide injunctions, you are being intellectually dishonest. Even Kagan has questioned that. A district judge acting outside of its district is as absurd as a governor of one state telling the governor of another state what he or she may or may not do. FYI, Congress has the power to abolish all courts below the Supreme Court. Congress can also abolish the Supreme Courts' jurisdiction, other than its Original Jurisdiction. So, these leftwing loons in robes are playing with fire.

Just like MT Suit, you still have not commented on Biden's jailing Catholic grandmothers protesting at Abortion Clinics, investigating parents who question school boards, TLM Catholics, etc. My assumption is you support this evil. Could you be a crypto Nazi?

This is THE most Cult47-like statement possible.

You are not a crypto- anything. Your absurdity on virtually every front is plain as day.

MT K,

Are you really this dense? Do you not understand separation of powers? I guess not, since you pretend to be a Catholic priest while voting for the Party of Intrinsic Evil that locks up grandmas. You are engaging in classic projection.

K must be in deep depression over a Catholic pope!

Since you are the ultimate low information voter who slops down on whatever the NY Times tells you to think, here is some news on Letitia James of “no one is above the law” fame who may have a rendezvous with justice. Enjoy!
