And poor MS Winters from the NcR. He sounds like Fr. Z in the first year of Pope Francis’ pontificate as Fr. Z tried to wrapped his head around a papacy unlike any other but desperately trying to read Francis through Benedict:

To be fair, he sounds as Father Z and yourself as you, and pretty much all other conservative catholic media, tried desperately to apply conservative spin/narrative to what Francis did, trying ever less successfully to show continuity to prior papacies and doctrines.
Also, to be fair, Leo might yet prove Winter muchly correct, as all Leo has done yet to date in/by already winning over more conservative elements, are entirely superficial acts of more traditional nature in restoring dignity AND authority/power to HIS office. He could still do such things as lighten up the oppression on the TLM, order more orthodox celebration of the mass of Paul VI, and still veer in a quite liberal way on actual Church teachings, and many "conservatives" focused entirely on externals would be far more muted in critical response.
Michael Sean Winters said..."Let's wait to see what he discloses about himself before rushing to squeeze him into narratives that were at hand no matter who was elected pope. Let this papacy be what it in fact is: new."
Exactly.
Unfortunately, certain folks are determined to pigeonhole Pope Leo XIV.
Certain Pope Francis "fans" are determined to portray Pope Leo XIV as Pope Francis 2.0. Said folks wish to pretend that everything that Pope Leo XIV will say/do, will match Pope Francis exactly.
Certain Pope Francis detractors will present gleefully Pope Leo XIV's every word/action as the repudiation/"cancellation" of Pope Francis.
Each group in question will attempt to hijack Pope Leo XIV. Each group in question will attempt to spin Pope Leo XIV to said group's advantage.
But as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had made clear, Popes teach the one and only Catholic Faith. Popes differ from each other in temperament and emphasis. But as Pope Emeritus assured us, from one Pontificate to the next, the Catholic Religion has remained the same.
There are folks who, unfortunately, attempt to pit Pope against Pope. But I will stand with Pope Benedict XVI as I grant to Pope Leo XIV my "unconditional reverence and obedience."

The heterodox right and left freak out. First it was the heterodox right over Francis and now the heterodox left over Leo. Winters is heterodox left and the quote you print in his article shows his discomfort as he tries to temper the heterodox left of the NcR and even kind of corrects Jesuit Father Tom Reese. But then Winters, complaining about a heterodox left complaining about the Mozzetta and stole says, and get this, (Winters) that Pope Benedict wore a black cassock under his white papal cassock when he appeared for the first time. Let me tell Winters, that Pope Benedict was wearing a black sweater under the cassock, as he was cold-natured. What gibberish and grasping for straws Winters does as he subconsciously tells us he’s freaking out over an orthodox pope.
Bob,
After the last 12 years, can you blame any of us for hoping for normalcy, as is understood in the Catholic world, as opposed to "mess"?
Folks are royally jumping the gun, however. Leo has been in Office for one week, Rome wasn't built in a day, and the entrenched bureaucracy he's up against won't always be eager to cooperate. That, coupled with "business as usual" daily affairs - reality - it will not be like Trump signing dozens of Executive Orders to a cheering crowd. People need to chill, trust and have faith.
I was at work and couldn't give it my full attention, but I believe Fr. James Martin was similarly trying to control the narrative when Leo was introduced.

Pope Leo has made a few things clear.
-- He is on board with the Synod. As Cardinal, he insisted during interviews that there are two Synods: The orthodox Synod, inspired by the Holy Ghost, that Pope Francis guided. The fake Synod, which he labeled as the "Internet" Synod.
As Pope Leo XIV, he has reiterated that he is on board with Pope Francis' holy, orthodox Synod.
-- He is on board with Pope Francis' implementation of Vatican II, as well the manner in which Pope Francis had reached out to the world. That does not mean that Pope Leo XIV will refuse to draw inspiration from his additional successors in regard to the Council's implementation.
I heed Pope Leo XIV's declarations...his actual words.

Mark, you sound just like Fr. Z 12 years ago. I predict the next synod will be refined as well TC.
Father McDonald, thank you for your reply, as well promotion of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV.
Father, I sound like Pope Leo XIV in that I noted simply his clear, unmistakable support in regard to Pope Francis' implementation of the Council, as well as the Synod.
As to the question of "refinement":
Pope Leo XIV will, via the Holy Ghost's guidance, "refine" — that is, move the Church forward — this and that. That is what Popes do.
Pope Benedict XVI had "refined" this, and that, in regard to Pope Saint John Paul II's Pontificate. Pope Saint John Paul II "refined" this, and that...etc.
As Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI declared in regard to His Pontificate, and Pope Francis' Pontificate:
"The Pope is the Pope, regardless of who it is."
[Peter Seewald] "So you do not see any kind of break with your pontificate?"
[Benedict] "No. I mean, one can of course misinterpret in places, with the intention of saying that everything has been turned on its head now. If one isolates things, takes them out of context, one can construct opposites, but not if one looks at the whole. There may be a different emphasis, of course, but no opposition.”
=======
That will prove the case in regard to Pope Leo's Pontificate, and Pope Francis' Pontificate...not a break, but refinement in continuity.
Pax.
