A 90-year-old statue in El Paso’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral was destroyed by a vandal on Tuesday morning.
A suspect has been detained by El Paso police, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
“I am in shock and we at the Cathedral are heartbroken over such an unexpected situation,” said Father Trini Fuentes, the cathedral rector.

It is a shame that civil discourse seems so non-existent anymore. Vandalism and character assassination seem to have become the preferred means. Shame.

"Civil Discourse" has never been a hallmark of this blog. It's largely been a one-sided, slanted harangue against people who aren't here to defend themselves.
Of course I could close the comment section and then what???? Best just to delete those I don't like in a monarchical fashion the king that I am.
In my most recent posting, I was referring to the topic - people destroy and destroy each other when they disagree. What was gained by destroying that statue? I wasn't referring to the combox. That said, I disagree with Anon @ 4:35. The regulars here often discuss/debate an issue in a tolerant, scholarly fashion. It is when one of the Anonymouses lurks and then jumps in to lecture, not discuss, that things fall apart. I have nothing against hearing someone else's opinion so long as its delivery is respectful and tolerant of an opposing opinion.

How about deleting the ones that are inaccurate & defamatory, include name-calling, insults & crude stereotypes or involve slurs against other people's faith, morals or ethnicity?
As opposed to just the ones you "don't like."
Your modus operandi so far is to allow all of the above for people who agree with you.
It is refreshing to see a man who is not afraid to stand up for himself. I didn't see the posts before they were deleted, and I am probably better off for it. Thank you, Father! Well done!

Thats too bad. I was invested in that conversation about the act being of Satan. You had made some good points and there was Biblical backup. If it could have been kept in check it may have left all of us with things to ponder.

I guess Fr. McD is just following the lead of Twitter, Google, and Facebook. But note, he didn't delete your criticism of him in this comment, did he Anonymous? In my opinion, he's too nice most of the time here, allowing comments that I am sure offend his sensibilities and are contrary to his point of view.
If you don't like the way he runs his blog, you are welcome to stop coming here to read and comment, or better yet, start your own blog where you can have the power of the delete button. It's a sure way of not being offended.

As a former blogger myself, I can completely understand Father's decision.
I tried to be open to all opinions and viewpoints when I ran my blog, and I especially welcomed opposing viewpoints. However, some people could not help themselves and insisted on either getting personal or belaboring a point that had already been discussed and addressed or just being obscene or inappropriate. On those rare occasions, I used my DELETE button.
I especially remember one person who kept making personal accusations against me. I replied that between certain hours I would publish my personal phone number in the reply box, so he could talk to me personally if he had the guts to do so. The call never came.
Anonymity is a great thing, because a lot of people could lose jobs, face ostracism, anger their friends or family members or face other unwanted problems for merely publishing an unpopular opinion or an opinion others disagree with. However, anonymity also emboldens a number of people a cloak of privacy to behave in a way that they never would under the glare of public scrutiny.
I appreciate Fr. McDonald's balance. He has been MORE than tolerant in his publication of differing viewpoints. Perhaps more tolerant than I might have been.
Since I don't have any understanding of how a blog works, I guess my question would be (and it may well be a stupid question) is why publish the comments in the first place only to be deleted. Right below this box it says all comments must be approved by the blog author, which to me means they are read before they are published. It seems like a lot of drama could be saved by simply not publishing certain comments in the first place, to have them seen and THEN be deleted. That to me seems like a grab for attention by the blog author himself.
I just checked the city of El Paso's web site. I found the following there:

A 30 –year old man was arrested yesterday morning after he destroyed a statue inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Central Regional Command Officers responded to the vandalism call and arrested 30 –year old Isaiah Cantrell.
Cantrell was charged with Criminal Mischief and Possession of Marijuana.
He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under bonds totaling $20,500.

Ahhh...the gateway drug. That isn't surprising.
Drug possession...demon possession.
During the late 1960s, I recall vividly my having watched the following episode of Dragnet.

The parents were high on marijuana. They had lost track of their baby. The parents, along with Detectives Joe Friday (Jack Webb), and Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan), rushed into the bathroom.
They found the baby at the bottom of the water-filled bathtub.
Watch the final couple of minutes of the episode, at the 21:21 mark.
The final scene, especially for 1960s television, was/remains powerful to me.
I will never forget what Detective Friday (Jack Webb) did to the bag of marijuana (at the 22:48 mark).

A@7:05, yes I could have completely deleted comments already published without a trace that I did so or use the option I chose which is quite dramatic if I sau so myself. It is possible, though that I inadvertently deleted some I did not intend. And yes I can choose not tp publish some and no one would know except the one who wrote it. There are scores and scores of those.
And speaking of unnecessary DRAMA.....I never realized that "Dragnet" had any religious value. Secular lessons......to be learned by anyone, Catholic or not. Certainly out of character for some people.
