THE WAY WE WERE

A reader sends me an old photo of Saint Joseph Church with the altar railing. Please note the sputnik speaker hanging over the congregation! Please note the altar railing is on the third step, between the main columns and how the left side of the railing has a portion missing to accommodate the old ambo.

The new altar railing will be on the first step that will be extended into the congregation. Thus the expansive sanctuary we currently have will not be compromised nor will the railing act as a barrier truncating the altar area. In fact it will enlarge things.

Those who attend Saint Joseph, do you note any other changes in the church?

I see a change . . . there is a HOLY priest in the sanctuary......

What about that light fixture over the ambo.

One change is the modesty in the clothing of the wedding party. Some of the bridal fashions today would make your grandmother blush. Just saying.

I don't see Fr. Dawid there!

The paint colors are different, and there seems to be a pendant light over the ambo. Some of the statuary appears different and I think we have more angels now. No ugly hand-rails.

I assume the placement of the chairs in the sanctuary were just for the wedding?

The three chairs in front of the old altar is where the priest and altar servers sat normally for Mass.

It is amazing how SMALL the sanctuary was with that rail placement. I had forgotten.

Very small and with the free standing altar no room at all.

Okay, what about the St. Patrick statue? Two missing angels holding candles; carpet in the sanctuary and hanging banners.

And the pillars do not look like marble like they do now. That was a great idea btw.
Was it three steps up to the sanctuary and four now or is the picture cut off?
Also now there is rose marble on the steps.
Father, you came to St. Joseph's during mid-renovation didn't you? That was probably a hard transition dealing with that and settling in.

It was a hard transition because the plan for the church wasn't properly thought out so we needed to make some adjustments. Previously as in the photo, the altar railing was on the third step, the same level as the ugly free-standing altar. Then the old altar was up three more steps with the presiding chairs at the top in front of the last supper scene, thus hiding it.

We elevated the altar area by one step, making it four steps up from the congregation, extended it forward, and then elevated the new and beautiful free-standing altar one more step and behind it the old altar is only one step higher but from the congregation the new altar looks like it is one with the old and the old doesn't overpower it.

You have to give credit to Saint Joseph's for keeping the altar rails as long as we did. When did they first come down? at the renovation? It wasn't because of the "iconoclasm" of the last few decades.

A modest proposal: That "The Way We Were" by Barbra Streisand be named the official anthem of Southern Orders.

I hated the way she was in "The Way We Were."
