POPE FRANCIS HAS A ROSY DAY IN CORSICA

 Pope Francis made a brief visit to Corsica and had a rosy Mass on Gaudete Sunday there.

My Italian grandfather had his roots in Corsica. You can see Corsica from Livorno where my mother was born and spent the first part of her life. It is a brief boat ride there. Corsica is French but has an Italian culture. 

The rosy vestments, although humble, to symbolize this pope’s exceptional humility, which His Holiness wears proudly, are far superior to the over the top clown vestments acquired by Noter Dame!

THE STATE OF THE CHURCH AND WORLD SEEN THROUGH THE EYES OF LUIGI MANGIONE, FROM A STRONG BALTIMORE CATHOLIC FAMILY!

 Has dumbed down, sin enabling Catholicism, in the name of pastoral sensitivity, brought about its logical conclusion, the culture of death?

Vigilantly social justice has been around in the Church since about 1968. Think of priests and nuns breaking into military installations to dint military weapons in pursuit to a pacifistic   Catholicism and world order.

Civil disobedience, breaking, entering and damaging defensive and offensive weaponry happened quite frequently in my Diocese of Savannah by priests, religious and laity, especially in Columbus, GA and and nuclear submarine base at King's Bay on our coast. 

But worse yet, is the glorification of abortion by the Democrat Party with unbridled promotion of abortion, the murder of innocent unborn children in their mother's womb and calling it women's healthcare! 

Both President Joe Biden, a pious, liturgical Catholic, and his airhead Vice President, Kamala Harris, glory in abortion and promote the most vicious form of the culture of death that there is. They deserved the landslide loss in the last election which I think is  retribution from God almighty!

Promoting death as a solution to a problem, be it a unwanted or problematic pregnancy or a CEO that one decides is responsible for the state of health care in our country and denying people in need the care they need are closely linked. 

That is the tragedy of a Baltimore Catholic Italian American gone crazy with hate and misguided vigilantly social justice. His elite non sectarian private high school was next door to my seminary in Baltimore.

 

He fell for what he lamented in a X post in April as reported by the National (not) Catholic Reporter:

 Sacred Heart Church purchased new vestments for Marian Masses which were used for the first time at this Sunday Immcaulate Conception Mass which fulfilled the obligation to attend this Holy Day without having to go again on Monday the 9th. These vestments are far superior and more beautiful than those used for the Reconsecration of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris! 

The only fly in the ointment was that I forgot to bring my beretta from home, about 40 miles away and Sacred Heart didn’t have any extra ones. So the acting deacon and subdeacon couldn’t wear theirs which they brought. 

C’est la vie!

LET ME ASK A QUESTION, IF THE VATICAN, WITH POPE FRANCIS PRESIDING, IS CELEBRATING THE SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8TH, WHY DID NOT THE AMERICAN BISHOPS MANDATE THE SAME FOR THE USA OR INDIVIDUAL BISHOPS FOR THEIR DIOCESES?

 Today, December 8, is the Second Sunday of Advent, but also the Solemnity/Feast of the Immaculate Conception, who is also the Patroness of the USA.

In the USA, where she is the Patroness, her feast is transferred to Monday, December 9th but still as a Holy Day of Obligation.

However, Pope Francis, at the Vatican this Second Sunday of Advent, presided at a Modern Papal Mass celebrating our Lady of the Immaculate Conception!!!!!

Those who are attending Mass in the Ancient Rite, like me, will also celebrate the Feast the Immaculate Conception too. At Sacred Heart Church in Savannah, at 1 pm December 8th, I will be the celebrant for a Solemn Sung High Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and also commemorating the Second Sunday of Advent. 

This will be the first time since the Modern Rite was enforced on all parishes in the late 1960’s that a Solemn Sung form of the TLM (with deacon/subdeacon) is celebrated at Sacred Heart Church. 

SOLEMN SUNG HIGH MASS FOR THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION ON SUNDAY DECEMBER 8

Be there or be square! It fulfills the obligation to attend the Immaculate Conception Feast transferred to Monday for poor NO parish people. 

I have to go to Savannah’s Sacred Heart Church this Friday afternoon, December 6, the Feast of Saint Nicholas, to rehearse for Sunday’s TLM Solemn Sung Mass with deacon, subdeacon and MC. I am the celebrant.

This type of TLM is quite complicated. Its complexity, I humbly believe, is what historically attracted men to the priesthood as it is somewhat militaristic and highly choreographed. You have to know and understand what you are doing.

While some call it a military march or exercise, others rightly point out that the TLM Mass is a dance, THE DANCE, highly choreographed. 

We need to recover all the things that the TLM gets right and the NO gets wrong. The NO forgets that the Mass is the music of the Liturgy not added hymns or junky music. The NO forgets that the Mass is the Dance not added so-called “liturgical Dance.”

EXCERPTS OF THE SOLEMN SUNG CHRISTMAS MASS IN 1948’S NOTRE DAME AND WHY POPE FRANCIS DID NOT FURTHER RESTRICT THIS AWE INSPIRING MASS…

 Please note how this form of the TLM has such close cultural connections, an ethos, with the Byzantine forms of the Liturgy!

There is a recent report as to why Pope Francis’ did not sign a document on his desk further restricting the TLM. It is because a Russian Orthodox friend of Robert Moynihan interceded on behalf of preserving the TLM. Moynihan arranged for this person to meet with the pope. He told Pope Francis that the TM has many things in common with the Byzantine Liturgy and many young people are attracted to this form of the Liturgy. 

It is clear by watching the 1948 Christmas Mass at Notre Dame the cultural connection and heritage that the TLM of the West has in common with the Byzantine Liturgies of the East going back to the 6th century if not before.

The Modern Mass is sterile and has more in common with the sterility of the iconoclasm of the liturgies of the Protestant Reformation especially in its puritanical forms.

Speaking in a November 7 podcast, Robert Moynihan stated:

I’ve a friend who is Russian Orthodox, I introduced him to Pope Francis some years ago more than ten years ago. They exchanged numbers.

I’ve always told him that we are very desirous of keeping a space in the church … for the old liturgy, which was similar in many ways to the Byzantine liturgy. He has appreciated this because he too is [Russian] Orthodox.

I said “tell the Pope that when you’re communicating with him because there are rumors that he may want to actually abolish the old liturgy, in a way that Joseph Ratzinger suggested was not even possible to do.”

He said he communicated with the Pope this past summer and told him that there were so many good, young people in America and other countries who love the old liturgy and they didn’t love it as a kind of sign of their anger against him, but simply because they love Jesus. They wanted to draw close to Him and the liturgy did that. And it was very similar to the way that simple people in Russia drew to the liturgy in the 1600’s, when the Old Believers were condemned because they wanted to keep the same, old liturgy and not the reformed liturgy in the 1660’s in Russia.

So this Russian told the Pope these things and the Pope said to him “I’ve got the text on my desk. They’ve told me that I should sign, but since you’ve told me all this, I won’t sign.”

NOTRE DAME’S MAGNIFICENT HISTORIC ALTAR, MAGNIFICENTLY RESTORED FOR FUTURE USE!

 Here is a very clear picture of the historic high altar of Notre Dame. Why the new one could not have approximated this one is beyond my comprehension. But if you look closely, it appears to be freestanding.

Thus for liturgical butterflies who are phobic about ad orientem, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass could just as well be celebrated on this historic altar ad orientem or facing the nave. Why not use it? That is the question!

It is not the property of the Church!

Since the French Revolution ending in 1799, Notre Dame has belonged to the French State and the French Government had EVERYTHING to say about its reconstruction and refurbishment. 

 That's why Macron had so much to do and say about raising the funds and the disbursement thereof and in choosing style, materials, etc., of what went into the cathedral during reconstruction post fire.

NOTRE DAME SEMINARY IN NEW ORLEANS RESTORED IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHAPEL

The before photo isn’t bad. I’ve been in this chapel a few times and it is beautiful. The redecorated chapel designed and executed by Conrad Schmitt and Company is wonderful and not overdone as they sometimes have a tendency to do.

The new free standing altar is lovely, but what a shame that it is politically incorrect to have maintained the old high altar and use it ad orientem for the Modern Mass. A completely ridiculous happening in the post-Vatican II Church. 

While the new look is more ornate, it looks less cluttered than the old look and replacing the marble walls in the nave with wood helps tremendously. Removing the hanging lights helps too. As a disclaimer, I used Conrad Schmitt in renovating and redecorating the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Augusta around 1997.

Am I the only one who sees the danger in this new Notre Dame’s “ambo” more like black music stands used in a high school band class? 

Shall bets be made on who will be the first to fall off this precarious platform and injure or kill themselves. And what kind of settlement will they get from the Archdiocese of Paris when the victim hires Ken Nugent? One call, that’s all!

YES, BUT…

 I like the traditional altar arrangement mandated in the pre-Vatican II Roman Missal and its general instructions/rubrics.

But in the case of the pre-Vatican II High Altar of Notre Dame, the oversized candlesticks and very oversized tabernacle hide the central image and iconic Notre Dame. Smaller candlesticks and a lower tabernacle would have prevented this.

The completely restored Notre Dame, thanks be to God, saved and restored the high altar which is stunningly beautifully compared to the new one, described by some, as a cereal bowl. It is a joke compared to the high altar. 

I’m not sure when Notre Dame will be re-consecrated. I am sure the modern liturgy will be beautiful as well as the singing. I suspect too, that candlesticks will be returned to the high altar in some form as well as around the new cereal bowl altar.

THE SILLINESS OF CURRENT HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION NONSENSE! LET’S RETURN TO SOUND TRADITION!

FROM THE DIOCESE OF SAVANNAH:

With the approval of Holy Mother Church, or, as some call it, the Vatican Regime, the American bishops many decades ago came up with a solution to reduce the number of Holy Days of Obligation in the United States.

Prior to Vatican II, in the USA the Holy Days of Obligation were Christmas Day (not Eve), The Circumsision of the Lord, January 1, Ascension Thursday, Assumption of the BVM, August 15, All Saints, November 1st, and Immaculate Conception, December 8th.

Well, the American bishops buying into the snowflake culture developing in the Church in the post-Vatican II period decided that it was just too hard for priests and laity to have to be obligated to attend Mass on Holy Days if the Holy Day fell too close to a Sunday. Thus the obligation to attend a Holy Day of Obligation was removed if the Holy Day fell on a Saturday or Monday. Such nonsense, no?

And in addition to that, the American bishops thought it was too hard for Catholics to attend Mass on Ascension Thursday so 40 days after Easter Sunday was made into the non-biblical 42 or 43 days after Easter as it was transferred to the following Sunday Vigil or Sunday Mass for the 7th Sunday of Easter! You can’t make this stuff up!

Recently, though, one of the Vatican’s dicasteries, the one least in chaos at this moment in Pope Francis’ papacy, decided to contradict the American bishops and say that if a Holy Day falls on a Saturday or Monday that if it is an obligation, it retains its obligatory character! Good for them.

However, uniquely this year, since December 8th is the 2nd Sunday of Advent, the Immcaulate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9th and thus in the USA, of course there was no obligation attached to it, but the Vatican dicastery disagreed.

By the way, Cardinal Cupich fingered the Vatican dicastery’s decision and has removed the obligatory nature of December 9th, really the 8th, since it falls on a day that isn’t the 8th and is a Monday. So much for synodality as I don’t think the good Cardinal consulted with the people in Chicago in a democratic manner or the rest of the Church in the USA or the Vatican Dicastery which clarified the obligation. 

But pre-Vatican II Tradition and its exquisite logic has the solution.

On Sunday December 8th, yours truly will be the celebrant for a Solemn Sung High Mass at Sacred Heart Church in Savannah. It will be for the Feast of the Immcaulate Conception and will satisfy the obligation to attend this feast day on the day it is meant to be celebrated. But in addition to that, the proper prayers for the Second Sunday of Advent will be prayed as well, thus killing two birds with one stone, a holy stone at that!

If only this could be done in the post-Vatican II debacle of obligations!
