The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has sent a communication to bishops around the world outlining what must be done to welcome back those who decide to leave the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X following the schismatic act that led to excommunication.

I would prefer they find a way to regularize the entire Order. However, so long as the Vatican lives up to its word (unlike that lying monster in Chicago did to the Institute of Christ the King), I think this is a solution. I am glad to see this. Maybe the Vatican is setting the table to abrogate the odious, TC!
The possible fly in the ointment is bishops refusing to accept them. After all, the reason the SSPX exists in the first place is that bishops refused to accept men deemed "too pre-Vatican II."
Two of my sons have godparents who are attached to the SSPX (these boys were “baptized” at an SSPX chapel — actually by now-Bishop Goldade — when they were born). These folks helped establish the church here, they have a son who is an SSPX priest, a daughter who is an SSPX nun. They have like 80 grandchildren (not exaggerating).
All that to say that many SSPX people are deeply intertwined… I think the Vatican drastically misunderstands the mindset of SSPX people.
Pope Leo XIV has dropped the hammer upon the SSPS.
That is the spin in line with numerous reports via Catholic and secular blogs/news outlets. , Niwa Limbu, accredited by the Holy See Press Office Staff Writer & Vatican Correspondent for @RealAdVaticanum, reported:
"The DDF decree marks a harsher tone than 1988 decree with no Ecclesia Dei carrot stick.
"Now Rome declares the consecrations the decisive break with the DEFCON 1 level punishments.
"Most serious move against the SSPX."
The SSPX has spun Rome's response in question as Pope Leo XIV having broken the hearts of the Faithful attached to the SSPX.

Cardinal Müller had called for a firm response to the SSPX's nonsense. That he has received courtesy of Pope Leo XIV.
In firm, unyielding fashion, Pope Leo XIV has made it clear that he will not play games with the SSPX. But his response to the SSPX is not devoid of mercy. Rather, his firmness with the SSPX is an act of mercy.
His Holiness has laid it on the line to impress upon the SSPX/laity attached to the SSPX the grave responsibility that said folks have to obey/remain in communion with the Vicar of Christ.
That which Cardinal Müller has not received is the establishment of a new Ecclesia Dei-like commission. Unless a drastic change of mind occurs, Pope Leo XIV has displayed zero interest in regard to that proposal from Cardinal Müller.
The guy who gave Francis a pass for not disciplining the Vatican clerics engaged in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy just weighed in. He has a lot of “credibility!”
I don't personally attend an SSPX chapel as my primary Mass, but there are some contradictions in this procedure for those are declared *not* to have incurred excommunication. The procedure says that those who attend SSPX chapels for purely liturgical or spiritual reasons (which I have two times in the past) are not excommunicated. Great.
Difficulty is, the procedure says even these people should approach a priest in good standing (which Fr. Z says "receive the sacraments from"; it doesn't mean "go talk to") "and resolve not to attend an SSPX chapel in the future." But if they don't incur excommunication or censure when attending for purely spiritual or liturgical reasons, why do they have to resolve not to go again? The decree of excommunication says the 1996 norms remain in force. So presumably, one could keep going to the SSPX for Mass with the right intention and still not be afraid of a censure.
