The official document, Lumen Gentium of Vatican II unambiguously makes clear the role of the laity in the temporal world. This is one paragraph that is so clear and so straight forward that a first grader could read it and understand it once they understood the word "temporal."
Mission Field of the Laity
Lumen Gentium emphasized that the distinct call of the laity is in the secular world, where they do the work of the Church by the way they live out their everyday lives:
"It is the special vocation of the laity to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God's will. They live in the world, in each and every one of the world's occupations and callings and in the ordinary circumstances of social and family life—. There they are called by God to contribute to the sanctification of the world from within, like leaven, in the spirit of the Gospel, by fulfilling their own particular duties." Vatican II
Now, having read this, I would suggest that Rick Santorum knows what his role as a layperson is to "seek the kingdom of God by engaging in the temporal affairs and directing them according to God's will." Rick Santorum is a Vatican II lay Catholic and although the world might think him to be "crazy" we've always known that being a Catholic in the public square is not about being successful (getting elected) BUT being faithful! What a powerful witness Rick Santorum is to what Vatican II actually called Catholic politicians to be! Thank you Senator Santorum!
Please note Bob Schieffer's astounding but typical bias!:
Now compare Rick Santorum's Vatican II faith to the "faith" of Nancy Pelosi who knows nothing or believes not in what Vatican II taught her as a lay Catholic to "seek the kingdom of God by engaging in the temporal affairs and directing them according to God's Will"! What a scandal to post Vatican II Catholics Nancy Pelosi is; will she repent? For the sake of her immortal soul, pray that she does!

Excellent post, Father, as we need to keep hearing this stuff, since many of us do not hear it from our pulpits. I know that you don't particularly like to "do" politics, and (at least used to) shun being drawn into political finger-pointing. But you seem to have mobilized yourself for this war we are in for souls and are ready to lead the Church Militant even to the point of involving yourself in the political arena. Would that you had been in town during the LAST election year--our parish surely could have used some authentic Catholic teaching authority rather than the divisive social activist stuff! Prayers coming your way...
Templar I deleted your post since you never know who might read your comment and mistake hyperbole for a threat of you know what I mean :)
I don't think she knows what a "doctor of the church" means. I think she thinks a Doctor of the Church is a medical doctor. She's a babbling liar.
Yes, Rick Santorum is a true Vatican II Catholic, in that he tries to bring the Church into the world, as John XXIII intended when he called the Council. Whereas those who hijacked the Council afterwards wanted instead to bring the world into the Church.
Incidentally, before Santorum visited our city for a pro-life event, he sent word ahead requesting that an EF Latin Mass be offered for his intentions. And while here, he promised that on his first Sunday in the White House if elected, he would lead the presidential reporters to their presumably first TLM. Though, I have the impression that when at home he most regularly attends an OF Latin Mass.
I am pretty astonished that anyone at all would be happy to have Ms. Pelosi speaking on their behalf. Her ideas to me are like theology mixed with Dr. Suess. (No offense to Dr,. Suess intended).
I live in Michigan, and am looking forward to voting for Santorum in our primary next Tuesday. He is leading in the polls, and it is said if Romney loses Michigan (his "home state"), he is finished.
I need to find out more about Santorum before I can support him. It is possible that he has some idea how to run the Government but they at least submerged under his 'revolutionary' ideas about family and life. If he was sinply going to extract the Government from my home and Church to maximum possible extent I could be attracted to that. But how would he handle what he is supposed to do as President? I am afraid he is marginally competent on those areas, unless he has ideas that have formed since he held office.

Thank you Father, it's just as well.

How funny is that?

Father, you might want to check out Santorum's pro-life record and voting on Title X (family planning ie contraceptives). He did numerous interviews in the past few days where he affirmed his voting for Title X (tax payer dollars to pay for birth control mind you.) and said he had no problem continuing that.
