We must update our old hymnal with a new one. This shows the selection of hymns in the new St. Michael Hymnal publish by World Library Press. While our parish does not sing Spanish hymns, that could change in a few years if the Hispanic population continues to grow in Middle Georgia, or if St. Joseph Church ever hosted a regional Spanish Mass for special events. There is also an excellent selection of Latin Hymns and Latin Mass settings! But almost every English Hymn is singable for our congregation. In addition, the Order of Mass has the Mass both in English and Latin on opposite pages and with the music for singing the Order of the Mass for both the priest and the laity. It is similar in format (in English) to the green booklets that WLP provided for the transition to the new English translation--very easy to find and use and especially helpful for non-Catholics and those in the RCIA to understand the Order of Mass. Looks like a good hymnal. I was surprised to see "Amazing Grace" in there...not exactly Catholic theology, but as a former Calvinist it is nostalgic. I was glad to see "Abide With Me," a wonderful and comforting protestant song. Also, "Nearer My God to Thee," an old Methodist/Baptist favorite. Now, if they would just add some of the great old Christological hymns like, "The Solid Rock," "My Faith Looks Up To Thee," and "Near the Cross...." Oh, and leave the original melodies...
I've attended Mass weekly since last July; weekly RCIA classes also, at my north GA church. I'm still leafing through the book, trying to figure out where we are, in the order of the Mass. Since I can't read music I can't be sure, but none of the songs we sing each week are sung to the melodies printed in the hymnal. I've learned most of these, but still I'm thrown off key a couple of times each week (not that I wouldn't be off key, anyway). So, anything that would make Mass easier to follow would be welcome.
But Father, where is "Rain Down"? Where is "Gather Us In"? No Haugen, Haas, Schutte, or Farrel?
It looks excellent. I wonder how many years it might take to introduce such a hymnal in my parish. Probably more than remain to me.
I agree. A very nice Hymnal. A few songs in there I'd rip out if I had my druthers (Gift of Finest Wheat!) but all in all, a nice Hymnal indeed.
In terms of "contemporary music" the only two nods to that that I can detect are "Eagle Wings" and "Be Not Afraid" Of course they are several Protestant Hymns from the Episcopal, Lutheran (Lift High the Cross) and Methodist tradition of hymnody. However, we've sung them for so long that most Catholics think these came from us, but what they have chosen are very good and a tremendous number of traditional Catholic hymns not found in our current "People's Mass Book" hymnal. And in terms of hymns, our current hymnal as many, many which we simply do not sing because they are unknown or too difficult to sing--I don't detect that many in this new hymnal that we wouldn't sing, the majority are singable! And a wonderful selection of Latin hymns and a hymn to the Pope, although when I look at the words I blush thinking what a Protestant hearing it sung would think--it does seem a bit idolatrous.
The two Protestant hymns that most of our Protestant "converts" appreciate and now most Catholics do are retained, "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." The latter is great when we have funerals and most if not the entire congregation is Protestant!
I'm not educated enough regarding Church music or the history of hymns in the Catholic Church to provide any real insight. However, if we (read: everyone in the Church but Marc) never sang "Gift of Finest Wheat" again, my quality of life would increase! I really, really, really do not like that song.
This hymnal also includes my other least favorite hymn. A hymn that ruins the entire season of Advent for me: "People Look East". Having to hear that song every week helps me to maintain the penitential spirit simply by having to sit through it!
(My post is meant in good humor as there are much more pressing problems in the Church than the hymnal and, really, so long as we're not singing Protestant hymns and no one is forcing me to sing... If these terrible songs bring joy to someone else's life, who am I to complain!)
:-)

This one? Every time I read some sneer at our Holy Father at that blog you frequent, I think maybe every parish ought to be required to sing it every Sunday for a while.
Marc there is no perfect hymnal that will please the 'masses". The Adoremus Hymnal has more than half its pages taken up with things that would never be sung here, and that's the front half of the book and then a very limited number of hymns.
Oh, I know that, Father. Music, whether secular or ecclesial, is a very subjective experience. I do not envy you as a pastor having to sort out what sort of musical program might fit a particular congregation as you will inevitably not please everyone!
I'm not complaining about it. I personally am not a fan of most music we sing at St. Joseph because most of the songs seem to be Protestant hymns (albeit modified in some cases). But, again, I know that I represent a very small minority of people in the opinions I have about the Mass generally, so it doesn't surprise me that my views on music in the Mass also differ from the majority of today's Catholics!
They don't force me to sing Protestant hymns, I don't force them to go to the Traditional Latin Mass. We all co-exist because the Church is universal! :-)
By some quirk, several years my residential parish (dominated by a rather liberal clique) received simultaneously a new pastor and assoc. pastor, both fully orthodox in both faith and liturgy. One of their steps toward the restoration of Catholic faith and liturgy was to acquire the Saint Michael Hymnal and to hire a new music director who would actually select only traditional hymns. All the old Haugen-Haas favorites suddently disappeared from parish use. This was one of several much-needed pastoral initiatives that prompted complaints to the chancery that resulted in their simultaneous removal and replacement after a year or so.
Henry, the words to "Long Live the Pope" in the St. Michael Hymnal(the first verse is the one that would drive protestants crazy and make some Catholics blush):
Long live the Pope!
His praises sound
Again and yet again:
His rule is over space and time:
His throne the heart of men:
All hail! The Shepherd Pope of Rome,
The theme of loving song:
Let all the earth his glory sing
And heav’n the strain prolong.
Beleaguered by
By the foes of earth,
Beset by hosts of hell,
He guards the loyal flock of Christ,
A watchful sentinel:
And yet, amid the din and strife,
The clash of mace and sword,
He bears alone the Shepherd Staff,
The champion of the Lord.
Then raise the chant,
With heart and voice,
In Church & school & home:
"Long live the Shepherd of the Flock!
Long live the Pope of Rome!"
Almighty Father bless his work,
Protect him in his ways,
Receive his prayer, fulfill his hopes,
And grant him length of days!
I think we should sing it this week Father. :)
Protestant ministers would not be upset for theological reasons, rather because the song was not being sung for them by their grateful congregations...Catholics have no idea of "clericalism." Seriously.
I prefer the Vatican II Hymnal because it has the Propers, readings, 100% of the Mass psalms, and all the accompaniments are also online.
D. we looked at the Vat. II Hymnal, in fact, I'm looking at it as I type this. It is a a huge book and only a small portion of hymns, very limited. The St. Michael Hymnal does have the official Introit set to music for each Sunday of the year though.
Say we replace "Gift of Finest Wheat" with "Panis Angelicus" on a permanent basis?
The New Saint Michael Hymnal looks like a keeper. It has "In Paradisum" "Jesu, Dulcis Memoria" (preferably with the Bach)and "Be Thou My Vision," so it is fine with me.
You cannot beat the name either.
They are such nice hymnals Father Allan! By the way, may I ask where you ordered them from because up here in Indiana in Lafayette, their is I think a little factory or place that makes them.
Vonito these are from Indiana, but I believe World Library Publications is the distributor, so we'll buy them through them.
Oh ok, cause the Diocese-of-Lafayette here in Indiana makes them (my diocese) just wondering cause we us the same one at church. They're really nice.
Lots of good, singable tunes.
#400 is one of Yoda's favourites. I bet you didn't know he was Catholic?
rcg
Father, I have heard it said the Vatican II hymnal is more of a hand missal than a true hymnal. Would you agree with that? It does have the EF. Does St Michael or Adoremous have EF?
Yoda? What the...?
As long as it has Attende Domine I'm set. It's pretty much my all time favorite.
The St Michael's Hymnal looks awesome, but Father, I'm curious -- did you ever consider the Adoremus Hymnal? ;)
We looked at both the V 2 hymnal and Adoremus and both have their merits. However neither have the number of Latin and English hymns. V2 is cumbersome but has the lectionary and both ef and of order of mass but complex to use. Adoremus doesn't have the introits for Sunday and more than 3/4ths of each are not hymns but what we would never use.
Two 'liturgical songs' that really effect me like nails on a chalkboard. One is "Lord Of The Dance". My previous pastor used to have that song played a lot. Thankfully my current pastor never uses it. I don't know if it is proper to say I hate a certain liturgical song, but if it is, then I do.
Second is "Hail Mary Gentle Woman". Something about the melody just irritates me. I think the Elvis Presley recording "Miracle Of The Rosary" is far superior melodically, and I wish it was used at Mass instead of "Gentle Woman".
Oh wait, I just now remembered that I know the priest who spearheaded the writing and publishing of the St. Michael Hymnal! Fr. Tim Alkire of the Diocese of Lafayette, IN is one of the most wonderful, orthodox priests you can find -- much like Fr. McDonald! *grin*
