MAYBE THE DECORATING BUDGET NEEDS TO BE CUT?

When the sanctuary is beautiful by design, why do people feel they need to add to it? This is not just ugly, but it distracts ones focus from the altar.

Perhaps this is for a festal occasion. Context would be really helpful here. It seems to be the custom in some parts of Europe to embellish this way for such celebrations. Of all the "more" that I've seen added to churches, this is actually one of the better versions. I can't imagine this church is presented like this all year. If just a weekend, for example, and given the hideous and horrendous displays chronicled on easy-to-find blogs and FB pages, this seem very light touch. While over-the-top from my U.S. Roman experience, this seems to be a cohesive display and that high altar is a presence such that not much is going to distract from it. This probably wasn't inexpensive to achieve either.

So many of such posts ignore culture and contexts. I am not against being critical of abuses or even tastes, especially churches indistinguishable from bus terminals and regional jails, but also know other cultures find flamboyant in very good taste.

Bob,

Very true of the Italians and Spanish. Anglos tend to be not into this sort of display. The same people who diss this are likely the same people who are for inculturation

It's one heck of a lot better than those insipid felt or hop-sack banners that some just swoon over. I have seen so many ugly V2 mod decorations in my life that i could puke! This is quite lovely and took more than a 3rd grader with a blunt nose safety scissors to craft! But sadly the priest "throne" is still front and center in front of the tabernacle, "look at me", V2 narcissism.

The Egyptian,

But the felt banners were so “meaningful” one of the most used and abused in the simpleton Spirit of Vatican II lexicon. The Era of Drivel which younger Catholics and priests are rejecting, giving PF and his Roche the sads.
