Fine, pray for Putin's sanity, but I would also pray for President Biden's and the leadership of our country, Democrat AND Republican.
Biden and our current "leaders" helped make this happen. By increasing America's dependence upon foreign suppliers for our energy needs, Biden has swollen the coffers of Putin's regime.
Biden and our current "leaders" , again, Democrat AND Republican have suddenly developed a conscience about the sanctity of a nation's borders--the problem is, it's not OUR nation! They continue to drive wages down and the need for social services up by leaving our border penetrable, penetrated and porous.
Most Americans are struggling to just pay their bills and not lose their homes--at least I am. It's hard to get me to be "willing" to make sacrifices that our President has decided I need to make to "defend democracy" when neither Russia NOR Ukraine are true democracies. Can most Americans even FIND Ukraine on a map?
I am not dismissing the problem, but we helped cause it by inept leadership. It's hard to find much resonance from a government that shut our economy down, but allowed rioters to destroy our cities because "justice" somehow demanded it--no. No. I am not advocating for isolationism, but this sudden concern with Ukraine by all of these sanctimonious people who have shut down free speech in their own country rings hollow.
Does anyone think Biden, Pelosi, McConnell and the rest of the clown show cast in Washington would respond with the same vigor if (or I should say WHEN) China invades Taiwan?
Thomas - I suggest the cause of the problem in Ukraine is Putin's desire for an empire, and his drive won't stop with Ukraine. He is aggressive and authoritarian, traits for which is was praised by then-President Donald Trump. That praise continued recently when Trump said, "I said, this is genius. Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine - of Ukraine - Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that's wonderful. So Putin is now saying it's independent - a large section of Ukraine. I said, how smart is that?"
From the Atlantic Council: "Putin’s complaints over the loss of traditionally Russian lands are a reminder that his aggressive foreign policy remains primarily directed against the ex-Soviet republics."
From Chiam Shinar "Putin, by his political actions in Eastern Europe, the Baltic States and Central Asian countries, and his current actions in Ukraine, strives to reestablish the nineteenth century Russian Empire, ignoring the principle of international law that protects the sovereignty of each nation-state over its territory."
From: The Business Insider "Thomas-Greenfield noted Putin said Russia has a rightful claim to all territories from the historical Russian Empire, which predates the Soviet Union."
From Vadin Shtepa at the International Center for Defense and Security, "Russian President Vladimir Putin interprets the nation not as a civil phenomenon, but as an ethno-religious community. This imperial mentality is incompatible with modern international law and is dangerous for all of Russia’s neighbours."
From the Brooking Institution: "Putin has laid out his view that all the states that emerged from the USSR are appendages of Russia. They should pay fealty to Moscow."
TG is correct. The weakness of our leadership, the wokeness of some of the electorate, privileged as they are to have some of these social issues to warrior against, is causing our adversaries to test us. This is not a solely a problem of countries whose ideologies are contrary to our own.
For those who may try to reason this with liberal babble, unless you are Slavic, you don't understand the Eastern European mentality, the inextricable role religion plays contraryto Western European/Anglo culture, the horridness of the treatment of our people in this country at the hands of the Roman Catholics and how that treatment gutted our churches, the effects of which are still felt to this day. You likely have no idea that the highest ranking cleric in this country is the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Sui juris Byzantine Catholic Church of the Ruthenians in Pittsburgh PA, NOT Cardinal Dolan. Please, therefore tread gently and carefully.
For those living in la la land (poster number 4) , here's the money quote:
Whatever you think of Donald Trump, he never would have allowed Vladimir Putin to run circles around him, which is what Putin has done to hapless Joe Biden. And he certainly would not have appeased Putin and given the Russian president everything he asked for from the START treaty to greenlighting Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline, without getting something in return. All Biden got from Putin was grief. Trump is a businessman and that is what businessmen do. They do not give things away without getting something in return. He is also a bully who knows how to deal with other bullies.”
I note that all of Father K's sources are left of center. They are busy at work spinning on how this is not due to Biden's incompetence and cognitive weaknesses.

Never would have happened under President Trump! He was starving Russia through his energy policies, not enriching them like Biden

I would trade Cardinal Dolan for the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Sui juris Byzantine Catholic Church of the Ruthenians
