IT IS THE POLITICAL SEASON, SO LET ME TAKE A POLL! HOW MANY OF YOU WERE OFFERED THE BLESSING OF THROATS FOLLOWING YOUR SUNDAY MASS IN ANTICIPATION OF THE MEMORIAL OF SAINT BLAISE THIS COMING WEDNESDAY???????

Of course, you know well that yours truly would have and did offer it after all our Sunday Masses to include our 12:10 PM EF High Mass for Sexagesima! Do you notice anything interesting about how we bless throats here?  Here's proof of our blessing of throats from our 9:30 AM Mass this morning:

In place of the final blessing at Mass this morning our pastor gave one general blessing in honor of St. Blaise. He did not use the two candles placed at the throat and he didn't do individual blessings.

We shall not be blessing throats until Wednesday because we use the candles blessed and carried in procession on Candlemass on 2nd February. Do you use last year's candles?

Hmmmmm...priest, parishioner interaction, outside the Mass, at St. Joseph?

Green vestments for the intercession of a martyr...?

I thought the candles from Candlemas were used for Saint Blaise Day, so how can this be done earlier? Also, since the blessing is a commemoration of a particular saint, why would we commemorate him on a preceding Sunday?

an announcement was made that blessing of throats would be done Tuesday evening and at Wednesday morning's Mass. I noticed that people are kneeling at the communion rail.

No, none in our parish was so blessed. Our Celebrant was the Bishop Emeritus Kevin Boland. He offered nothing or announced anything upcoming this week, or even reference St. Blaise. He talked about himself and what he had been doing this weekend, and ended the homily with a quick reference to the Gospel reading. Nothing more. Sadly, no surprise there at all--

Blessing of throats will be done after Mass both OF and EF on Wednesday with blessed candles.

Did the candles I used, which have been used for years, somehow lose their blessing? The rubrics for Candlemas only speak of candles given to the laity at the Mass not all the liturgical candles.

Are those candles, or oil lamps like the ones surrounding your altar?

All our candles are beeswax! The ones at all our altars are in metal tubes that appear to look like candles. The beeswax candles are inserted into a spring loaded contraption which as the candles burn, pushes the candle up. Thus about 99% of the candle is burned while the metal tube makes it appear the same size no matter how much of the candle is consumed.

My home parish prior to Vatican II had the same type for the six high candles as did most parishes. It gave the altar a consistent look.

If the candles are from a previous year - do you use old ash from previous years on Ash Wednesday? We use ash from last year's palms. Do you also get last year's paschal candle out of the drawer and light it again at the Easter Vigil? Are your oils fresh from the Chrism Mass each year or are they kept from year to year?

At the Institute of Christ the King parish here, the blessing of throats will take place after the Mass on Wednesday for the feast of St. Blaise, as well as this coming Sunday following Mass.

We have the blessing on Wednesday (after candle mass the previous day). They will also be given on Quinquagesima Sunday after all masses.
