There is now even more continuity between Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, the tendency on pilgrimages to fall asleep during Mass!
Pope Benedict in Malta in April of 2010:
Pope Francis, yesterday, in Washington, DC:
I've never fallen asleep at Mass, but maybe dosed off in Confession a couple of times!

I have fought to keep my eyes open during some lengthy sermons.

It's a good thing that he unnecessarily adds an Eco-friendly car to his motorcade when he could instead just slide into one of the 6 giant sized SUV already there. False humility is what makes me want to fall asleep.

Yes, but interestingly enough never ever even once at a Latin Mass
I bet you wouldn't fall asleep in one of my confessions.
Sometimes, the minute I sit down in a pew I feel sleepy. I think it is the fact that I am in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament and it allows me to relax in a way I cannot anywhere else.
Yes, more than once. I agree with the 10:40 AM anon. The presence of Blessed Sacrament allows for great rest.
A story is told of two priests in our diocese at a parish in Savannah. One was presiding, sitting in the chair while the other was preaching. The priest in the chair dozed a moment before the preacher arrived at a long-ish pause in the homily. Awakening at that moment, the preside assumed the homily was done and stood, saying strongly, "Let us together profess our faith!" I am told the glare of amazement and wonder from the preacher was momentous!
Haven't you noticed that Pope Francis is leaning a bit to his left? I have a hunch that his sleeping position has something to do with his "left-leaning" stances. ;)
