Fr. Lombardi said the doctor advised Pope Francis to cancel his scheduled visit and rest. He was supposed to arrive at the Major Seminary at 6pm, answer seminarists’ questions and attend a dinner with them

IACOPO SCARAMUZZIVATICAN CITY
Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s visit to Rome’s Major Seminary, where he was scheduled to be at 6pm this afternoon has been postponed. “Pope Francis will not go to the Roman Seminary because he is not feeling a hundred per cent and has a slight temperature. The doctor has therefore advised him to cancel his scheduled commitment and rest,” Fr. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman said in a statement issued in the late afternoon. Francis was due to visit the Seminary to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Trust and meet with seminarists, accompanied by the Cardinal Vicar Agostino Vallini. Later he was going to answer some questions put to him by the seminarists and have dinner with them, before returning to the Vatican this evening.

Not to make light of the Holy Father's illness, someone has said that he has the bird flu and that he caught it from a cardinal! I think His Holiness would be cheered up even by that although I don't know if it would translate well into Spanish or Italian.

Bird 'flu? Must be a result of the stunt with the pigeon. Also there was a photo of him carrying someone's potential Sunday lunch draped on his shoulders, so he might have picked up a sheep tick. Kissing babies is not a good idea - the little blighters are veritable germ factories.

Which actor was it who made the remark about never working with children or animals?

John,
To attempt to answer your actor question, I believe you are referring to William Claude Dukenfield, aka W.C. Fields.

I believe he once said that any many who didn't like dogs or children can't be all bad. I also once read that when he was on his deathbed, he was once caught reading the Bible (he was reputedly never a very religious man and the person who caught him knew this). When asked why he suddenly had taken up and interest in reading Scripture he is said to have replied. "Looking for loopholes."

Nonetheless, he was a very funny comedic actor and it is a shame that he didn't make it into more films.

Ah, right. I think it was WC Fields who said "a woman drove me to drink but I didn't have the decency to write and thank her" and "I believe in tying the marriage knot. Preferably around the woman's neck".

Correction: Any man (not "many") that didn't like dogs and children. . .
