Did the Pope Emeritus celebrated his first mass after the conclave facing the congregation? I hope the new Pope will not undo what the Pope Emeritus had accomplished in his tenure as far as liturgical celebrations.
I will not defend facts of observation--or lack of observation--but it must be noted that the false floor and Ikea altar from the Conclave are still there.
There are Masses of his on You Tube from before he was elected. If you want to scare the Traditionalists (or anyone who cares about liturgy), post those...
The insertion of the freestanding altar is an insult to beauty of the chapel Michaelangelo built for the glory of God. I am puzzeled at His Holyness' insistence to say mass in this manner when ad orientem, turning to God, would comport better with the essence of his homily directing the faithful to keep our attention on Jesus on the cross?
We are all men of our times. I think Our Pope is the same with the added influence of originating in a country that has been, and to some extent remains, in civil war. I will take it on faith that he did nothing against any previous Pope, nor against the teachings of the Church. If his Masses were something different than what I would want, then I will chalk that up to his need to lead and hold together a flock that was tearing each other to pieces.
What will he do now that he has the spotlight? Will he decide to press onto the world Argentine Liturgical views?
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI did not bring the EF back to us from anything the Germans did. He stated that it was allowable. Did BXVI even hold an EF mass? I do not know, but I do know that none of the Masses I have seen him lead were EF. The one in Germany his last visit was straight up NO with all the weird colours and strange music that form has come to represent. So I do not look for him to dictate our form, nor to establish it by example, anymore than his dear predecessor.
I like very much his take on Social Justice as it is practical and does not seem to be accusatory nor political. I am a hard core Capitalist and understand that it is the proper method to distribute wealth by creation of it. What I see is a performance based outcome, not a dictated methodology that is so offensive from many Bishops in the USA.
In any case, it is my job to help my Pope be successful, so I am all in and will do my best to create outcomes that can be held accountable to his teaching. This reminds me of conversations I recall having with non-Catholics who wondered why I worshiped the Pope or followed blindly. Of course neither of those are true. I am confident that as the FSSP could remain in communion with the Church just as the SSPX could not, that we will continue to remain One Holy Catholic Church through out the reign of Pope Francis.
What Gene said. Especially in light of Francis's statements while cardinal about denial of Communion.
On the other hand, There's no particular reason for Francis to know, or to have briefed himself on, Biden's dissent prior to that Mass. So while it would be a disappointment, we need to keep it in perspective.
I hear you, Gene. I would be happy beyond reasoning if Pope Francis slapped Biden and sent him back to the pew. But I must avoid creating tests in absentia for Pope Francis that actually pose more of a hazard for me. This does not mean that I won't do my best to figure out how to continue with my TLM parish within whatever guidelines he presents in that regard.
Anon 5, I would have a great deal of difficulty believing the Pope would not be informed about Biden, et al. Surely, someone will apprise him of the problem. No, this is a chance to send a message. Of course, if Biden has any sense at all, he will not go to receive.
I cant say Im not worried about his liturgical style. I too saw the video of the youth mass with yes- puppets and a risen Christ corpus.
I think the Benedictine reforms are over unless he assigns that task to someone else, the GREATEST prayer of the church is going back to its kumbayah days.
Gene, before Biden was picked as VP he was obscure in DC and is till not much more than comic relief overseas. If I am going to get angry at someone, it would be at Biden for being so selfish and self-centered to put his Pope in that position at all.
What would be Cool For The Ages would be for P-F to offer to receive Biden privately - In the Confessional!!!!

Let's all see how long that altar arrangement lasts.

I saw where Joe Biden will be in attendance next Tuesday for the instillation Mass. I wonder if Pope Francis will deny Biden communion?

If Biden goes to receive and is allowed to do so, then my hopes for this Pope's reign will be greatly diminished.

Though, I pray that I am VERY VERY wrong...
