COMPARING ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS
I now have Fr. Z's slavishly literal translation included:
For the 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time, the "lame duck version of two prayers and the new and improved version coming to a Catholic Church near you a year from now:
WDTPRS (Fr. Z) SLAVISH OFFERING:
Guard your family, we beseech you, O Lord,
with continual mercy,
so that that (family) which is propping itself up upon the sole hope of heavenly grace
may always be defended by your protection.
The lame quacking duck soon to drown:
Father, watch over your family
and keep us safe in your care,
for all our hope is in you.
The new and improved which we are all eagerly anticipating:
Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care,
that, relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace,
they may be defended always by your protection.
The nearly dead quacking duck who is lame:
God our Father, you give us a share
in the one bread and the one cup
and make us one in Christ.
Help us to bring your salvation
and joy to all the world.
The new and improved Peking Duck or is it Beijing Duck that makes your mouth water for its taste next year:
O God, who have willed that we be partakers
in the one Bread and the one Chalice,
grant us, we pray, so to live
that, made one in Christ,
we may joyfully bear fruit
for the salvation of the world.
