A WONDERFUL PAPAL COMMENT AND GESTURE: A POPE WHO IS A CHRISTO-CENTRIC PONTIFF (BRIDGE-BUILDER)…

 Pope Leo XIV has congratulated Cardinal Burke on his Golden Jubilee of his Ordination, writing:

'He has preached the precepts of the Gospel according to the Heart of Christ and has recounted His treasures, diligently offering his devoted service to the Church universal'

Nice to see--much better than snide mockery for getting a bad case of COVID, etc.

Though I was assured by the most vociferous papal boosters that Cardinal Burke is a schismatic/heretic/hateful proponent of Satanic ideologies, so I don't know how to square this with that.

I have thought about Cardinal Burke in light of the recent SSPX attack against Pope Leo XIV.

Said attack also denounced Popes Saint John Paul II (requiescat in pace), Francis (requiescat in pace), as well as Vatican II.

From: SSPX:

https://fsspx.news/en/news/leo-xiv-positions-ecumenism-blood-key-christian-unity-53250

-- Leo XIV Positions Ecumenism of Blood as the Key to Christian Unity

"During his (June 29) address at the Angelus prayer on the feast day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, Leo XIV spoke of his role in serving the unity of the Church and the "ecumenism of blood" that unites all Christians through the witness of the martyrs who gave their lives for Christ, regardless of the church or ecclesial community to which they belong.

=======

Pope Leo XIV:

"Even today, there are Christians throughout the world whom the Gospel makes generous and bold, even at the cost of their lives. There thus exists an ecumenism of blood, an invisible and profound unity between the Christian Churches, which, however, do not yet experience full visible communion.”

=======

The SSPX continues:

"But it must unfortunately be noted that the notion of ecumenism of blood is erroneous."

"Thus, this doctrine professed by John Paul II, Francis, and now Leo XIV, besides having no theological foundation...dissolves the clear boundary between the one true Church and all those who have separated from it."

"It also creates the feeling that one can be saved indifferently in any religion and contributes to that relativism that is destructive of the true faith, which finds its starting point in the declaration Dignitatis Humanae of the Second Vatican Council."

=======

The SSPX would have us believe that His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, as well as Vatican II, are "destructive" to the Faith.

To return to Cardinal Burke: He declared that the SSPX "is in schism since the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre ordained four bishops without the mandate of the Roman Pontiff."

"And so it is not legitimate to attend Mass or to receive the sacraments in a church that’s under the direction of the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X."

The question is will Pope Leo XIV throw in with Cardinal Burke grave comments related to the SSPX's supposed "schism"?

Will Pope Leo XIV permit the SSPX to continue to inform the Faithful that their holy Pope is a false teacher?

Will Pope Leo XIV permit the SSPX to continue to wage war against Vatican II?

The SSPX's influence far exceeds its boundaries. The SSPX is a major force within the TLM Movement.

Is it time for a Pope, in protection of his spiritual children, to throw in with Cardinal Burke's grave warning against the SSPX?

Perhaps agreement with, as well as firm action in line with Cardinal Burke's declaration in question, would result in Pope Leo XIV's having contributed mightily to the reigning in of excesses that have long marred the TLM Movement.

I take it that you are opposed to Pope Leo’s ecumenical outreach to the Eastern Orthodox Churches as they have for centuries denigrated popes for various “erroneous” theological positions and some of the orthodox call the pope of Rome the devil and do not accept any of the sacraments of the Romish pope. He’s not even ordained!

I am on board with our Holy Father's ecumenical outreach to the Eastern Orthodox. I recall the vile insults that were hurled at Pope Saint John Paul II (requiescat in pace) during his visit to Greece.

But His Holiness is free to take corrective actions that pertain to the SSPX that are unavailable to him in regard to the Eastern Orthodox.

Perhaps Cardinal Burke is onto something in regard to the SSPX.

At the very least, the notion that holy Pope Leo XIV is a false teacher, and that the Council teaches grave error, as the SSPX reiterated a few days ago, demonstrates that which His Holiness is up against in regard to the SSPX/TLM Movement.

Again, perhaps Rome should take seriously Cardinal Burke's grave warning against the SSPX.

It'll be interesting to see Pope Leo interacts with the SSPX. But from the SSPX's position, they pretty much have to say those sorts of things -- that is their reason for existence.

The situation with the Orthodox is different than that of the SSPX. Orthodox ecclesiology holds that there are no sacraments outside the Church -- the pope is outside the Church -- so, he is not ordained. (I don't think that Leo is the devil: he seems like a nice enough guy from the little I've read about him!)

The SSPX, on the other hand, profess to be within the Catholic Church; yet, they refuse to submit to the pope. Instead, they have created some Platonic ideal of what the papacy is based on historical documents and profess allegiance to that idea. And it is within those papal documents that they are required to submit to the actual person of the pope. It is a truly bizarre avoidance of reality on their part.

My point to MT is that the SSPX is a piece of cake for being made regular even if they dismiss much of the VII documents compared to the orthodox who dismiss everything in the Latin Church since their Great Schism. Both the east and west are responsible for that.

I'm not so sure about that, Fr. McDonald. Within the SSPX sphere, there are lots of different opinions among both the clergy and the laity. Some of the SSPX clergy are extremely hardline, professing that Rome needs to renounce its errors in order for there to be regularization. Others are more friendly toward Rome and would likely gladly sign on to a regularization tomorrow given the right structural agreements.

There seem to be similar divides among the laity. For certain laity, even getting a rumor that the priests are moderately friendly with the local bishop is anathema. Others, though, might go back and forth between SSPX chapels and regular Catholic parishes.

These sorts of things have already led to countless breaks within the SSPX itself. That makes sense since they are de facto sedevacantists, for the most part.

It's a tough situation to reconcile given the self-imposed ostracization that the SSPX engrains in its attendees. A lot of the older SSPX priests so effectively preached against the modern Roman errors (from their perspective) that there are now generations of people very solidified in their thinking. It would be hard for the SSPX to walk that back. Although, it is inevitable that they will need to consecrate new bishops in short order, which will probably provide some climax to this whole ordeal one way or the other.
