On August 27, 1915 — 109 years ago today — Bishop Patrick Heffron of Winona was shot twice (presumably in the back) while he celebrated Mass, in his private chapel.
Heffron wasn’t shot by some anti-Catholic Know-Nothing or member of the KKK. The shooter wasn’t some jilted paramour, or someone Heffron owed money to from a game of cards. And the shooting wasn’t done in odium fidei, by some anarchist, communist, or crazed Minnesota Lutheran.

It looks like you’re celebrating Holy Mass in a crowded dining room. If ever a church building could benefit from attaching a decent altar to the wall and uncluttering, this is the one. I know the top parish in the entire Diocese of Charleston can do as well as Stella Maris, for example, where the re-establishment of the fixed altar opened up the sanctuary and the lines of sight and serves as a reminder that perhaps, just maybe, the Catholics that came before us might have known what it was they were doing. It was all so “pre-Vatican II” in the pre-Vatican II days. You might remember back when Catholics actually did all that “Catholic stuff.”
Agree. This church is nice, but every time I see it, I just want to rearrange things and get rid of the plant that is preventing the priest from approaching the holy table. The laudian style covering that doesn't look crisp/neat, wrought iron candle holders and mikes too. Distracting clutter that forest of iron and steel. This church could be stunningly Roman with little effort.
I have celebrated mass at St. Gregory's. The photo foreshortens the space considerably making it look "cluttered." There is actually ample space in the sanctuary, much more that the picture makes it seem. The sanctuary space is three steps above the floor, so there is no problem with lines of sight. I do wish they could do away with the microphones and stands in front of the altar. Wireless microphones anyone?
I must bite my tongue concerning those microphones!
Setting aside the ad orientem question, the microphones are pretty bad! Even if they have to be wired, why not use some kind of unidirectional table-top setup? There are plenty of options at a variety of price points, and any of those options would be much more discrete. The microphone stands aren't even painted according to the liturgical color.
