YIKES!

Yikes! Holy Thursday’s Chrism Mass with the pope at St. Peter’s Basilica. Bernini’s baldachin over the main altar is undergoing restoration. This structure and the papal altar are directly above St. Peter’s Crypt containing his bones…

Isn't there another major basilica lying around somewhere they could use

I feel for the poor tourists who, not knowing about the restorations, walk into St. Peters and see the shrouded scaffolding.

My first trip to Europe was in 1987 and one of the things I was excited to see was the mosaic facade on the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. You can see it in high resolution here: https://www.christianiconography.info/sicily/christThronePOutsdeWallsFullResPage.html

Alas, it was being RESTORED in September 1987 and covered with a heavy scaffolding and veil. So. seeing it live and in person will have to come on my second trip to Rome.

Rumor has it that the Pope doesn’t like backwardists or restoration of anything. His Holiness is having it removed and sold wo money can be given to the poor. It’s all a part of his new epoch church, a poor church for the poor people who no longer go to church in an epochal change. And the rich people who enter the basilica to no baldachin and an altar made of Lincoln Logs, will no longer give to the Church in honor of this pope’s pledge of a poor church for the poor.
