From Crux:
Pope faces civil, ecclesial backlash for Ukraine ‘white flag’ remarks
As reported by Rorate Caeli:
Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Statement on Francis: “ Ukrainians will continue to defend themselves. They feel they have no choice.” - Synodality in Action
Statement of the Permanent Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church In light of the interview of Pope Francis Conducted by Radio Télévision Suisse
We do not yet have a full version of the interview given by Pope Francis to the RTS (Radio Télévision Suisse) that apparently will be published only on March 20. According to the Holy See Press Office, the reference to a “white flag” in the interview is a summons to negotiations not to a surrender by Ukraine. In the conversation, the Holy Father speaks not only about the Russian war against Ukraine but also the war between Israel and Hamas. As he has done repeatedly, Pope Francis calls for negotiated settlements of armed conflicts.

I will leave it to others "read between the lines." That is, I will leave it those who wish to spin that which the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church actually declared.
I applauded the Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishops' refusal, via their statement in question, to have rushed-to-judgement against the Vicar of Christ.

Pope Francis has faced the same nonsense that Pope Benedict XVI had faced throughout the latter's Pontificate. Pope Benedict XVI words were misrepresented, often viciously, by folks within, and without, the Church. Rome was forced to rush clarifications to set the record straight on Pope Benedict XVI's behalf.
The most serious of said cases involved Pope Benedict XVI's speech in regard to Islam. The misrepresentation of said speech resulted, in certain Islamic nations, in violence against Catholics. Pope Benedict XVI's good name was trampled as the result of his misrepresented speech in question.
One could cite many additional Pope Benedict XVI-related controversies that pertained to his declarations having been misrepresented. But now, it is Pope Francis' turn to experience the same trampling of his good name that Pope Benedict XVI had experienced.
It is disturbing that there are Catholics who are more than willing to rush to judgement against our holy Popes...Catholics who are keen to jump at the chance to assume the worst about our holy Popes...to jump at the chance to trample a Pope's good name.

"Ukrainians will continue to defend themselves. They feel they have no choice."
There would not be a need for Ukrainians to "defend themselves" if the world would heed the peacemakers — in particular, the wonderful peace efforts of our holy Popes that date, for example, at least to Pope Venerable Pius XII.
Today, the scourge of war would not exist if the world would throw in with Pope Francis' holy peace efforts.
Vatican II declared: "It is our clear duty, therefore, to strain every muscle in working for the time when all war can be completely outlawed by international consent."
Instead, there are too many folks, in particular, political leaders, who are quick to embrace war, rather than peace negotiations.
Pope Francis called for a cessation to war, not just in Ukraine. The interviewer employed the phrase "white flag." In turn, His Holiness picked up on that phrase to call for a timeout to war. Raise the "white flag" as a way to call for a timeout period so as to attempt to negotiate a just ansd lasting peace.
Pope Francis stated clearly...clearly...that he was not talking about a surrender. Just pause to attempt a peaceful settlement in place of war. Incredibly, despite his clear words, there are folks who have claimed falsely that Pope Francis demanded that Ukraine surrender.
The misrepresentation of Pope Francis clear comments is disgraceful. The rush-to-judgement lynch mob that has assaulted Pope Francis — that has trampled his good name — is disgraceful.
It is horrifying and shameful that said lynch mob includes Catholics.

LOL
TJM
It can't stop talking to itself.
Pope Francis today reiterated:
"Let's pray to the Lord to give us the grace to overcome this madness of war, which is always a defeat."
=========
In line with that, I pray that each country/warring party throughout the world would today turn to Pope Francis to coordinate the process that in peaceful, just fashion, would bring an end to each war on earth.
As the bishops of the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church declared, Pope Francis is the "universal voice of truth and justice."
In turn, Pope Francis, the "universal voice of truth and justice," is the holy instrument through which Jesus Christ is able to lead us out of war, into the light of peace and justice.
