His Holiness has indicated that the issue with his colon that required major surgery to remove the portion of the colon affected by that issue has returned. He hoped it would be treated this time with medication only.
It is possible he is having steroidal medication that could be causing the weight gain or being very sedentary now with his bad knee, he’s eating too much pasta, my favorite comfort food, and not exercising.
The weight gain could also indicate congestive heart issues:

Let's stop what we're doing and pray for Pope Francis, for his physical and spiritual well being.
I imagine he is suffering in many ways. I predict, though I do not claim to be clairvoyant like our Blogger Father McDonald, that we will have a new occupant in the monastery formally occupied by Pope Benedict XVI by the end of this summer. ABP Ganswein was evicted....who will be moving in I wonder? Inquiring minds would like to know. Pray for our Pope, Francis, that God will ease him ever closer in dignity, comfort, and love.
Prayers for the Holy Father. Differences are put aside as superfluous when people are confronted with issues such as health.
I pray for Francis that he stops his needless persecution of the faithful who respect and find spiritual comfort in all Catholic Traditions.
