As old as it is, it also has likely been through the Spanish American War, and certainly a Japanese invasion of the Phillipines, where perhaps funds had been lacking to restore to former looks. This is apparently the final step in a major restoration of entire building started back in the early 2000s.
No doubt the second photo is wonderful, but frankly, I have been so conditioned to mediocrity in church art & architecture that even the first one seems better to me than most churches we've been conditioned to accept.

Wow, that is incredible.

What an incredible transformation. Sheer beauty. The parish must have had a very generous budget to accomplish this!
'Before' has one altar; 'After' appears to have three, each in front of the other. Can someone explain?
John Nolan,
It looks like a fancy prie-dieu
Could it be arranged for a nuptial Mass?
Before is plain!
After is ugly ostentatious display of gold!!
