VERY INTERESTING ORDINARY FORM TRANSITIONAL DIACONATE ORDINATION

This semi-public ordination to the transitional diaconate took place in the Cathedral in Covington, Kentucky.

The New Liturgical Movement posts these photos. Keep in mind it is an Ordinary Form Ordination. Do you note anything unusual about this ordination?

I am not that familiar with the protocols but it was nice seeing the Benedictine arrangement!

Dude looks a little old to be a transitional deacon.

Maybe a permanent deacon?

As one who attends the TLM exclusively I noticed the Pontifical gloves immediately!! Very unusual for a Novus Ordo service but heck I like it proving that yes you can have TLM elements in the Novus Ordo but let Bishop Pete of Boise know about this!!!

Agree - likely a permanent deacon. Interesting to see a NO Ordination Mass with episcopal gloves. It doesn't appear that the bishop is wearing a tunical/pontifical dalmatic. His shoes look to be street shoes. That aside, this mass would be easy on the eyes to have witnessed.

7th candle on the altar?

What is kind of sad is that the bishop of a small, US diocese is vested better than the pope. Maybe he could give the pope some lessons on vestiture

The photograph at NLM where the bishop lays his hands on the ordinand clearly shows the pontifical dalmatic. The very full cut of the chasuble makes it difficult to spot, but if vestments are symbolic and send a message (as Fr K rightly observes) then this would be a prime example.

Also the vestments are modern, designed by Jordan Hainsey. As in music, modern does not necessarily mean minimalist. Arvo Pärt's music is minimalist and communicates in its unique way. James MacMillan's music can be complex, even dense, and communicates in its unique way. Some may prefer one to the other, but it is possible to appreciate both.

I was Baptized and made my first Comunion at St. Mary’s Basilica in 1956. Beautiful church.
