THE VATICAN QUESTIONAIRE, CAN WE VIEW IT IN A POSITIVE WAY?

There is some concern about the Bishop of Boise and his mandate not to place into the OF Mass EF elements, which are allowed in the OF, such as ad orientem, kneeling for Holy Communion and customs of use of the pall, chalice veil, burse and use of bells.

Of course, to outlaw what the Roman Missal in the Ordinary Form allows is a bit dictatorial, like outlawing intinction when it is in the GIRM of this Missal and adapted for use in the USA and approved by the highest authority.

One of the Vatican questions is EF elements brought to the OF. Wouldn't this be an organic development of the OF Mass which was contrived in the years leading up to the 1970 issue of the revised Mass, albeit deformed?  There was not organic development that led to the temporary "suppression" of the 1962 Missal (although not across the worldwide board) when the new missal, contrived by liturgical theologians as if in a lab, a short of coronavirus manufacturing of it that was forced to go viral).

But now there is organic development of the OF Mass, precisely because the EF Mass was freed from the dungeon of a museum in Rome by Pope Benedict in 2007. The good things of the EF are being applied to the OF Mass to make them look like they are in continuity with each other, thus an organic development of the OF Mass. How cool!

Keep in mind, that it was Pope Francis in 2014 I think issued the now famous Ordinariate Missal, called Divine Worship, the Missal.

It integrates not only Anglican patrimony into this Roman Missal but also EF sensibilities. It allows in an appendix the revamping of the Introductory Rite to include the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar and the EF order of the introductory Rite.

It explicitly allows ad orientem, kneeling for Holy Communion and other EF sensibilities.

In the Missal itself, not the appendix, it is clear that the Roman Canon is used on Sunday and only Canon II is allowed during the week (no other canons).

The traditional Offertory Prayers are an option, the three-fold "Lord I am not worthy..." and the double genuflections at the consecration in addition to kissing the altar each time the celebrant turns from it to face the congregation as in the EF.

This Missal came from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the CDF, the same congregation which has issued the questionnaire to bishops around the world concerning the EF Mass and its influence on the OF Mass.

When I was on sabbatical in Rome in 2013, we visited the office of the CDF for a workshop. I asked an official there if we could see similar options in the Ordinary Form Mass as allowed in the Ordinariate Missal. He said yes, but there needed to be an advocate for such a thing, which the Anglican Ordinariate had in Rome, especially with Cardinal Mueller, the head of that Congregation at the time, but others too.

Thus I am optimistic that we may see a revision of the current OF Missal to introduce into it what the Ordinariate Roman Missal already has and which was approved than non other than Pope Francis with his name in the Forward of this Missal.

I tend to guess that they will go back to the more restrictive indult days, attempting to corral people into the Ecclesia Dei groups like the FSSP. Then they’ll limit the expansion of the FSSP and others while forcing them to use the new prefaces and celebrate the new “saints.”

I thought they intended to consolidate all traditionalists under the SSPX and give them juridical status, but I no longer think that’s the plan. Given they just declined further doctrinal discussions with the SSPX and given the ailing health of Bp. Tissier, I suspect we will soon see a change in the SSPX’s status as the need arises to consecrate another bishop.

Somehow all of these things will play out in concert.

I hope you are right. Not having liturgy wars in the Byzantine Church, it is a much more calm and focused part of the aggregate church. We can focus on growing spiritually and learning our traditions not what the Bishop of Boise is going to decree, what survey might alter the balance with in addition to the ground gained by the EF, what goofy peas/corn/fruit tableau the "art and environment committee" will come up with next, what goofy and cringe worthy "number" the liturgical dance troupe will subject the congregation to next and which priests vests like priests and acts like a priests at the altar. I forgot, how on earth did all those Vatican 2 people at Praytell get the way that they are and how many of them are there?

I could have spent a lot of time on a thoughtful response but, we've visited this topic and its benefits to the church so often, I don't know what possibly to add at this point. The Church has to decide if it wants to be Catholic or not. 50+ years of "not" should make the choice easy and obvious I would think but, the a good amount of the hierarchy never fails to disappoint.

I'll predict something in between. SP and all indults will be rescinded making the EF only available through groups like the FSSP or ICK. 1962 Masses will be forbidden at the typical parish.

The OF will receive a few traditional options, but not too many. If an ordinary priest or group of laity want the old Mass in an ordinary parish setting, the OF with a few traditional options will be their only choice.

but, BY ALL MEANS, we must visit the sick in nursing homes...

By Bria Bolden | April 27, 2020 at 10:45 PM EDT - Updated April 27 at 11:36 PM
RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) - As of Monday morning 41 percent of the COVID-19 deaths reported in Georgia are nursing home residents.

Residents and staff in nursing homes make up 16 percent of the statewide confirmed case.

Here at home, Bryan County Health and Rehabilitation Center currently has 14 residents and one staff member who’ve tested positive for the virus.

Bryan County Health and Rehabilitation Center has been a part of the Richmond Hill Community for 23 years.

They house 79 residents and say testing for COVID-19 hasn't been easy.

“It has been so difficult to get accurate and quick testing. This week was really one of the first weeks when the testing became available. We’ve struggled with testing because in the nursing home I cannot care for the sick patients and keep the well patients well without knowing who is infected,” said Operations Manager Terry Cook.

The center has 14 residents who’ve tested positive for the virus.

If the Catholic people would simply vote in a manner which would quickly get the attention of such Bps as Boise results might be forthcoming. For example: Don't attend Mass. Don't contribute to the parish monetarily. Establish picket lines at the parish and Diocesan chancery. And for the priests who might be inclined to include EF elements in the OF type of Mass, do it anyway. What is the good Bp going to do? paddle you? If all else fails, invite the SSPX to establish a parish in your area. People, where there is will, there IS a way. Get a spine and DO something.

Wasn’t there a post here recently about some Italian fellow that recommended rescinding Summorum Pontificum? This letter sounds like a ‘push pole’ looking to collect arguments against it and get people to think of complaints against it.

Wouldn't it be nice Father, if an Ordinariate parish were established nearby and you were given faculties to celebrate for/with them?

We'd love to have Father McDonald celebrate mass for us.

What survey and where can it be found. Ad orientem is mentioned in the OF of the Missal. As in "The priest turns and faces the people..."
