I've been studying these photos, and I have no idea what you're seeing that's peculiar.

Wow! You really looked closely at these pictures. I've no idea what that is. My initial thought is that it's something to help turn the pages of the missal.

A yad ( Hebrew: יד ‎, literally "hand"; Yiddish: האַנט ‎) is a Jewish ritual pointer, popularly known as a Torah pointer, used by the reader to follow the text during the Torah reading from the parchment Torah scrolls. Is that what it is?

In a Pontifical High Mass the Assistant Priest, who wears cope over choir dress, indicates to the bishop what is to be read/sung using either his hand or a pointer.

What is peculiar is that the bishop is wearing his pectoral cross over the chasuble and that the Gloria is being sung in Passiontide.

If it were most USA parishes, the mystery object would be the essential holy vessel of a Bic butane barbeque lighter, where no Mass or votive candle lighting complete without CLACK CLACK CLACK as a call to worship.
