SACRED HEART CULTURAL CENTER IN AUGUSTA RETURNED TO A CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR A DAY

In 2001, the Knox family, owners of the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Augusta, now Sacred Heart Cultural Center, allowed me to celebrate Solemn Sung Vespers for the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the building. We brought Sacred Heart’s candlesticks and crucifix, now used at The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, six blocks east of Sacred Heart, for this celebration:

Why is the deacon carrying the Gospel Book? As far as I know (and I have sung Vespers in both the older and newer forms) there is no gospel as such. The Magnificat is a gospel canticle but is not proclaimed by the deacon.

Actually, in Solemn Vespers the deacon and subdeacon don't have a lot to do.
