THIS IS RATHER STUNNING, A CARDINAL IN PRISON WRITES ABOUT HIS CONCERNS OF THE PAN AMAZON SYNOD

I happen to believe that Cardinal George Pell was framed and unjustly convicted of the crimes of sex abuse against a minor.

Therefore, his imprisonment is a crucifixion and share in the Cross of Christ. Thus what he writes (if in fact he is unjustly imprisoned) takes on a prophetic edge to it, no?

Well, that's no "Ballad of Reading Gaol" or "Letter from Birmingham Jail" or "To Althea: From Prison."

The money quote:

“This is not the first low-quality document the Synod secretariate has produced,” Pell writes.

It is very interesting that Cardinal Pell feels compelled to do this at all. He surely understands his circumstances and that that situation certainly works against the credibility of his position. He must feel desperate that no other voices are being raised, or raised effectively, against this synod. He may also be willing to advance against the opposition precisely because he is so vulnerable and can draw the fire of their arguments for better positioned people to engage.

Cardinal Pell's faith in the Lord may be undaunted, but his faith in the Australian legal system must have taken a knock. Juries occasionally return perverse verdicts, but this was an extreme example. The trial judge should also have considered the evidence, and given the manifest weakness of the Crown's case, should have directed the jury to return a verdict of 'not guilty'.
