The priest looks like he's my age and thus this is predictable for my age group of priests. The question remains though for the poor children abused by this kind of creativity during Mass.
More than likely when they grow up they will see the Mass and religion as a joke and will choose to become "nones."
Thank God that my foundational Catholicism was pre-Vatican II, and with a mystical Latin Mass that would never allow this kind of April Foolishness!
I copy this from Fr. Z's blog:
In the Diocese of Scranton, for the Easter Vigil at Corpus Christi parish in W. Pittson, PA. Superhero Vigil Mass. HERE

I just found the following information via Google:
From the parish in question:
Church bulletin, February 4, 2018 A.D.
"Boys and girls, you won’t want to miss this Mass as we will begin our Lenten journey by helping our “Super Heroes” regain their powers! Immediately following the Mass, all are welcome to join us for donuts and refreshments in the church hall."

SOS aka Save our Super Heroes
Last Sunday at the Family Mass, our special guests, Clark Kent (Superman), Bruce Wayne (Batman), Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) and Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) made a plea for your help!
They have lost their special powers and need your “good deeds” to restore them. Do a good deed each week during Lent, write it on the paper from your Superhero cup, and place it in one of the containers on the “Super Hero” table in front of the altars in the churches. Hint of the week: The super power of kind-ness is contagious. So make someone happy by sharing a smile and a kind word.
Pax.

which superhero is Kavanaugh playing, Wonder Woman?
The sentiment of this aside, why do adults feel the need to shove this sort of thing down children's throats? As Fr AJM suggests, they will likely grow up to become nones as a result. Authenticity is what appeals to children and young adults, not childishness that profanes the altar. I grew up with this sort of nonsense in the 1970s. Then, when visiting my grandmother and going to her church (which, at the time still maintained Ad Orientem posture until a late 70s renovation forced the addition of an honestly beautiful and complementary table altar), I was stunned/amazed at what worship was supposed to be. At that young age, I knew, without a doubt, I liked and wanted that.
This does nothing to teach faith, teach a love for the tradition or, respect for the church and its sacraments.
ByzRC,
This is all about the adult juvenile delinquents running the show and has nothing to do with the "children." I agree this will backfire and have the unintended consequence of instilling in these young children that what they are doing at Church is unimportant as evidenced by the Liturgy being trivialized in this fashion. I could chant 5 Latin Ordinaries by heart at age 10 and I was not an exceptional child.
TMJ,
Are you putting words in his mouth? Like
"I am Fr. Kavanaugh and I approve the message sent by this travesty."
Henry,
LOL!!!

Thank you Mark Thomas for looking into this a little bit more to find out the point of the Superheroes in this event. I was afraid it was that Jesus was a Superhero too, on par with Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman....you know, just a good guy with super powers doing good deeds.... Or maybe it was. I guess you had to be there. (And I am sincerely hoping the man in the Superman outfit was not the priest.)
But I'm still wondering why the "Super Hero" event could not have been held in the church hall during the donuts and refreshments after Mass, instead of as a part of the Mass.
In any case, I think this is right up there with the German "carnival" Mass...
God bless.

Through his priests, including Fr Kavanaugh, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus.
What's your super power?
Bean, is that you Kavanaugh? Your comment has the scent of eau de Kavanaugh
So much for modest attire at Mass.

Bean said, "Through his priests, including Fr Kavanaugh, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus."
Exactly my point. To reduce Jesus to a Superhero with super powers is to make Him a created being with extraordinary powers, not God.
God bless.

P.S. Alas, I have no super power. I'm just a poor mortal, and as such, wholly dependent on the mercy and pity of God.
Jesus is not - cannot be - reduced to a superhero. That's not what the theatre piece did at all.
It spoke, we hope, to young people in a language and with concepts they already understand. This is a tried and true form of pedagogy that works.
And I thought Scranton was a fairly conservative part of Pennsylvania---certainly compared to the very liberal Philadelphia metro area, where Clinton beat Trump by a 2-1 margin in 2016.
Are you kidding me? Scranton is as liberal as it gets. I know cuz I live in the Diocese of Scranton. Liberal, modernist bishop.
The same priest did a haunted rectory a few years ago. Photos turned my stomach. Won't even explain them in my comments. Then a few years he ran around the mass as a big gold star. Kids were little stars.
Super heroes and Easter bunny at Easter Sunday mass????? Pictures showed a packed house. Did anyone have an issue with this?
God have mercy!
This Mass was on Easter Sunday at 10:30 AM, the Family Mass. They started this in February and this blasphemous mass was on Easter.
Notice the sign on the last photo - All superheroes don't wear capes. Are they referring to Jesus? This is despicable, the focus should have been on Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, not on fictional characters. Shame on the Pastor and parishioners who thought this was OK.
Can you guess what happened when calls were made to the church office re: this Mass? They immediately removed the photos.
I see the "Good Catholics", you know, the viscous gossips, the perpetually offended purveyors of hate, still like to grab their torches and pitchforks and attack that which they can't or won't understand. You people wouldn't know Jesus if he walked up to you and gave you the slap you so rightfully deserve. Signed, Joe Rogo, Pittston, PA
