SUNDAY AT AUGUSTA!

Although I grew up in Augusta and have been to the Masters many times, I am not a golfer and find it boring on TV except for Sunday at the Masters! Last night did not disappoint! The last few moments of the game are always exciting and emotional especially when the win comes down to "sudden death" as it did yesterday! And what great sportsmanship too! And I have a first cousin in Livorno named Sergio a name I would have loved to have had!

Sergio’s Sunday

Spaniard takes playoff to win Masters, first major

MICHAEL HOLAHAN/STAFF sergio Garcia celebrates his Masters tournament victory – and his first major championship in 74 starts – after defeating Justin Rose in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

"..been to the Masters many times..." There are thousands of golfers out there, myself in particular, who would die for a chance to attend the greatest of all golf tournaments. That said, way to go Sergio! We have been waiting for this since 1999 -- it's about time!

If, as Oscar Wilde once said, foxhunting is the pursuit of the inedible by the unspeakable, golf is certainly the pursuit of the inedible (golf balls are, I imagine, far too tough and chewy).

The Wilde quote was, "The unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable." LOL!

I was paraphrasing, and I still think my version is better.

Anon 2, Well, your grammar and word choice are better...but, hey, it's Oscar Wilde, man.

I was down there Sunday and the weather was just glorious, in comparison to the cold and wind of Thursday. Even leaving the course grounds was not too difficult (parking) but I-20 going back to Atlanta was fairly congested for that mostly rural stretch. Father, I will have to say after taking quick look at downtown Augusta on way out, exiting off the Calhoun Expressway, things don't look too great below 15th Street, lots of vacant buildings---I guess the exodus to Columbia County has not stopped, and wonder if Columbia will someday pass Richmond in population?

Yes, downtown Augusta is quite blighted especially at its gateways and vacant buildings in the city center. N. Augusta is revitalizing because of strong, unified gov. Leadership which Augusta has seriously lacked for generations. And yes Columbia count is booming and will become larger in pop soon. But with that said, there are some promising developments happening to include new hotels and Augusta University's Cyber Security school on the river front, an over $50 million Dollar investment and the university continues to expand downtown.

Father M., your having grown up down there, maybe you could explain why they built the Calhoun Expressway? Must be one of the world's shortest expressways, I think little over two and a half miles long. It really sliced up the old Harrisburg neighborhood and blights the view in front of Sacred Heart at 13th and Greene. It seems almost unneeded given that River Watch Parkway can now take traffic from downtown out to Columbia County without getting caught up along congested Washington Road around I-20.

I agree with your comments concerning the university and cyberspace security..I suspect though with faster growth in Columbia County, the Catholic growth in the area will continue moving west...some have even told me that St. Marys on the Hill has had some decline as people move toward St. Teresa of Avila in Columbia.
