SEEKING TO PUT POPE BENEDICT ON TRIAL A BLESSING IN DISGUISE?

John Allen of the National Catholic IllReporter has a very good article on how the publicity stunt of SNAP bringing to the World's Court might be a blessing in disguise. I didn't think of it in that way:

If he were arrested, he would be the first Pope since Pius VII, I think. I simply can't imagine human authorities laying hands on the Vicar of Christ. What judgement that would bring on them.

Ack!! I can't believe I lost control of my senses for a few minutes and actually clicked on an NCR link. I'll have to go run an exorcism on my laptop.

No way. First of all it sets the precedent that people can use a court like the International Criminal Court to trump any nation's sovereignty. Then every nut job with an axe to grind can accuse anyone of crimes against humanity. Allen must have his head muffled by his pants to think that this would be a rational venue for the Church to let the world know what nice group they really are. A fair trial has a finite scope on the charges. All you will get here is an endless litany of accusations. There are people, and nations, that don't like Catholics this is only giving them a theatre to act out their hatred.
