WHEN PROGRESSIVE CATHOLICS BECOME DOGMATIC WITH NON INFALLIBLE PASTORAL INITIATIVES

As we all know and experience in politics, liberals are some of the most dogmatic ideologues around and will hold an inquisition if one doesn't buy into their liberal agenda.

The same is true of progressives in the Catholic Church. They strive to implement not only the documents of Vatican II, but also its false "spirit" in the most pre-Vatican II dogmatic way. They elevate to dogma that which is only pastoral. It is the same spirit but at the opposite spectrum that leads traditional Catholics to turn limbo (a pastoral solution to a difficult subject about where unbaptized babies go when they die--limbo which is a nice place compared to hell, since the unbaptized can't go to heaven) into a rigid doctrine or worse yet, dogma. It is a pastoral theology.

I read a piece from Crux this morning highlighting the unshocking news that in the ranks of those in the SSPX are those who have sexually abused children and an apparent cover-up by the SSPX. You can read the horrible stuff here at Crux. But Crux presents this as though the SSPX are the only ones who have this issue because they are so dogmatically traditional, when we know that the full communion of the Catholic Church has an abysmal track record on the same subject and with quite liberal bishops who exacerbated the problem from which there seems to be no relief from the damage done.

But what got my attention in that Crux article about the SSPX was this:

Since its inception in 1970, the SSPX has been a lightning rod in the life of the Catholic Church. It’s seen in a favorable light by some Catholics who harbor reservations about the liberalizing reforms unleashed by Vatican II (1962-65), but as retrograde and dangerous by others who object to its hard-line positions on matters such as ecumenism, inter-faith dialogue, religious freedom, and liturgical reform.
Some have also accused the SSPX of turning a blind eye to prejudices the Church has made strenuous efforts in recent decades to combat, including anti-Semitism.

I would think that there are just as many if not more anti-Semites in the full communion of the Catholic Church as there are in the SSPX and in the south a goodly number of racists, not to mention those who are adulterers who avail themselves to Holy Communion each and every time they attend Mass  even if that attendance is only two or three times a year. But what the heck, the God of mercy sees Holy Communion as a charm that will heal the sin-sick soul in a magical, miraculous way. Our Lord is not a prize for the virtuous but medicine for the anti-Semite, the racists and pedophiles to include those despicable priests who commit these crimes and the bishops who turn a blind eye. What is important is that they would like to change but circumstances prevent it.

But even worse for the progressives  is that the SSPX or even rank and file full communion Catholics don't buy that Vatican II's pastoral initiatives with ecumenism, inter-faith dialogue, religious freedom and liturgical reform are set in stone, or even doctrine much less than dogma. In fact these pastoral initiatives have a shorter lifespan in the tradition of the Church than that other pastoral theology: Limbo for which one can actually make a good case!

And then we have this wit and wisdom from an infamous and very disappointing liturgical blog that is as narrow-minded as anything I've seen from the SSPX and in fact its liberality is put forth in the most pre-Vatican II dogmatic and authoritarian way possible:

The rest of the Church accepts Vatican II and accepts what Pope Paul VI said repeatedly and very strongly: the reformed Mass of 1969 is faithful to Vatican II. You’re free to hold your idiosyncratic opinion, but it’s not persuasive to most other people.

The Mass of Paul VI is not set in stone and of course it’s reformable. But future reforms would deepen what happened in 1969 and carry its trajectory further. I suppose some things could be scaled back and some ‘traditional’ elements giver greater emphasis in a future reform – but within the liturgical understanding of V2 and 1969, not in opposition to it. All this is distinct from your desire to undo much of 1969, interpret V2 very selectively (and strangely), and in fact undo much of that the Council fathers called for. You cite a few cherry-picked phrases of V2 to argue against 1969, but it’s obvious that you don’t really accept V2 and your starting point is preconciliar.

Good [luck] with your minority agenda. But in my judgment: Not. Going. To. Happen.
Enough on this topic! It’s all been said here many, many times... Please don’t bring up this agenda over and over at Pray Tell...

In my humble opinion, let's discuss limbo, it has more going for it than the wit and wisdom of progressives with their infallibly presented authoritarian dogmatic ideologies.

SSPX IS VERY GRATEFUL TO OUR HOLY FATHER, POPE FRANCIS AND HIS INITIATIVE IN REGULARIZING THEIR PRIESTS WHEN IT COMES TO THE SACRAMENTS OF PENANCE AND HOLY MATRIMONY

This is the communique from the SSPX on Pope Francis solicitude for them as His Holiness strives to reintegrate them into the full communion of the Church in union with the pope:

Communiqué from the General House about the letter from the Ecclesia Dei Commission concerning marriages of the faithful of the Society of Saint Pius X (April 4, 2017)

4-04-2017

As with the measures taken by Pope Francis granting to the priests of the Society of Saint Pius X the faculty to hear confessions during the Holy Year (September 1, 2015), and extending this faculty beyond the Holy Year (November 20, 2015), the General House has learned that the Holy Father decided “to authorize Local Ordinaries to grant faculties for the celebration of marriages of faithful who follow the pastoral activity of the Society.” (Letter from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith dated March 27, 2017, published on April 4).

This decision by the Supreme Pontiff foresees that: “Insofar as possible, the Local Ordinary is to grant the delegation to assist at the marriage to a priest of the Diocese (or in any event, to a fully regular priest), so that the priest may receive the consent of the parties during the marriage rite, followed, in keeping with the liturgy of the Vetus ordo, by the celebration of Mass, which may be celebrated by a priest of the Society.”

But it also provides that: “Where the above is not possible, or if there are no priests in the Diocese able to receive the consent of the parties, the Ordinary may grant the necessary faculties to the priest of the Society who is also to celebrate the Holy Mass, reminding him of the duty to forward the relevant documents [attesting to the celebration of the sacrament] to the Diocesan Curia as soon as possible.”

The Society of Saint Pius X conveys its deep gratitude to the Holy Father for his pastoral solicitude as expressed in the letter from the Ecclesia Dei Commission, for the purpose of alleviating “any uncertainty regarding the validity of the sacrament of marriage”.

Pope Francis clearly wishes that, as in the matter of confessions, all the faithful who want to marry in the presence of a priest of the Society of Saint Pius X can do so without any worries about the validity of the sacrament. It is to be hoped that all the bishops share this same pastoral solicitude.

The priests of the Society of Saint Pius X will strive faithfully, as they have done since their ordination, to prepare future spouses for marriage according to the unchangeable doctrine of Christ about the unity and indissolubility of this union (cf. Mt 19:6), before receiving the parties’ consent in the traditional rite of the Holy Church.

New pastoral provisions for Sacrament of Marriage for SSPX

04/04/2017 11:59:

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See has established new provisions for the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony by members of the faithful who are attached to the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX).
Listen to Christopher Wells' report:

In a letter approved by Pope Francis, Cardinal Gerhard Müller says, “The Holy Father . . . has decided to authorize Local Ordinaries the possibility to grant faculties for the celebration of marriages of faithful who follow the pastoral activity of the Society.” The Pope's decision adopts a proposal by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, both of which are headed by Cardinal Müller.
The new provisions are part of a number of ongoing meetings and initiatives aimed at bringing the Society into full communion; Cardinal Müller’s letter mentions specifically the recent decision of Pope Francis to grant all priests of the Society the faculty to validly administer the Sacrament of Penance to the faithful in order “to ensure the validity and liceity of the Sacrament and allay any concerns on the part of the faithful.”
The grant of faculties for the celebration of marriage is subject to several provisions: “Insofar as possible, the Local Ordinary [that is, normally the local Diocesan Bishop] is to grant the delegation to assist at the marriage to a priest of the Diocese (or in any event, to a fully regular priest), such that the priest may receive the consent of the parties during the marriage rite, followed, in keeping with the liturgy of the Vetus ordo, by the celebration of Mass, which may be celebrated by a priest of the Society.” That is, a priest in good standing is to preside at the celebration of the marriage itself, which in the extraordinary form takes place before the nuptial Mass. The Mass itself may then be celebrated by a priest of the SSPX.
The letter also foresees that circumstances may exist where those provisions are not possible, or where no Diocesan priest is able to receive the consent of the parties. In such cases, the Pope allows the Ordinary to grant faculties to the priest who will celebrate the nuptial Mass.
Cardinal Müller closes his letter expressing his conviction that “in this way any uneasiness of conscience on the part of the faithful who adhere to the Society of St. Pius X as well as any uncertainty regarding the validity of the sacrament of marriage may be alleviated, and at the same time that the process towards full institutional regularization may be facilitated”; and that, to that end, the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei “relies” on the cooperation of the prelates of the Episcopal Conferences concerned in this matter.
Below, please find the full text of Cardinal Gerhard Müller’s letter:
Your Eminence,
Your Excellency,
As you are aware, for some time various meetings and other initiatives have been ongoing in order to bring the Society of St. Pius X into full communion. Recently, the Holy Father decided, for example, to grant all priests of said Society the faculty to validly administer the Sacrament of Penance to the faithful (Letter Misericordia et misera, n.12), such as to ensure the validity and liceity of the Sacrament and allay any concerns on the part of the faithful.
Following the same pastoral outlook which seeks to reassure the conscience of the faithful, despite the objective persistence of the canonical irregularity in which for the time being the Society of St. Pius X finds itself, the Holy Father, following a proposal by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, has decided to authorize Local Ordinaries the possibility to grant faculties for the celebration of marriages of faithful who follow the pastoral activity of the Society, according to the following provisions.
Insofar as possible, the Local Ordinary is to grant the delegation to assist at the marriage to a priest of the Diocese (or in any event, to a fully regular priest), such that the priest may receive the consent of the parties during the marriage rite, followed, in keeping with the liturgy of the Vetus ordo, by the celebration of Mass, which may be celebrated by a priest of the Society.
Where the above is not possible, or if there are no priests in the Diocese able to receive the consent of the parties, the Ordinary may grant the necessary faculties to the priest of the Society who is also to celebrate the Holy Mass, reminding him of the duty to forward the relevant documents to the Diocesan Curia as soon as possible.
Certain that in this way any uneasiness of conscience on the part of the faithful who adhere to the Society of St. Pius X as well as any uncertainty regarding the validity of the sacrament of marriage may be alleviated, and at the same time that the process towards full institutional regularization may be facilitated, this Dicastery relies on Your cooperation.
The Sovereign Pontiff Francis, at the Audience granted to the undersigned Cardinal President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei on 24 March 2017, confirmed his approval of the present letter and ordered its publication.

Rome, from the Offices of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 27 March 2017.

FIRECRACKERS! ANOTHER BOLD BISHOP SPEAKS THE TRUTH!

I copy this from Fr. Z's blog:

In his address, Archbishop Sample speaks ve-ry de-lib-er-ate-ly since he is speaking from a text which sounds, given the audio, as if it was being simultaneously translated.  So, I will provide the video from YouTube as well as the audio accelerated 2x to make it a little shorter and easier for English speakers to listen to.
The faster audio, 2x – twice as fast – as the video.  Remember, the Archbishop was speaking deliberately slowly to the audience in Germany.

DID CRUX WRITER MAKE A FREUDIAN SLIP?

Maybe I am wrong, but isn't synodality spelled with a "y" instead of an "i" as in sinodality?  But given that Pope Francis' concept of it allows for mortal sin and Holy Communion, then sinodality may be correct!

Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski of the Ukrainian Diocese of New Westminster, British Columbia, spoke with Crux about their recent meeting with the pope, during which they discussed many issues, including the youth, assisted suicide and sinodality. He also spoke about the "blessings" and "challenges" of ordaining married men into the priesthood, something many eastern Catholic Churches have done for centuries.

I SO ADMIRE THE INCLUSIVTY, OPEN-MINDEDNESS, AND FLEXIBILITY, NOT TO MENTION ACADEMIC FREEDOM, OF PROGRESSIVE CATHOLICS

You can see what I mean in this humble exchange (oh and by the way did I say I love the humility of Catholic progressives?). This exchange is about the Corpus Christi procession which will be move this year from tradition's Thursday time to the following Sunday, the first time in history for the pope's Corpus Christi procession!

  • pm
Simple solution that makes everyone happy: restore the Corpus Christi octave, and permit an external solemnity of the feast on a Sunday. Done and done. It can even be a simple octave without octave days.

    @Ryan Ellis:
Except, if you’ve read up on the evolutions and reforms of the calendar throughout history and especially in the 20th century, you’ll know that this would be highly displeasing to lots of people who accept the post-V2 liturgical reforms. There are only two octaves now, and for a reason that is compelling to many or most of us. And “external solemnity,” what’s that? It’s not in the rite as reformed.
If you were writing tongue-in-cheek or impishly, then disregard my reply. :)

LIMBO IS BACK, BUT NEVER REALLY GONE, AND IT IS A DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH BUT NEVER SOLEMNLY DEFINED AND CERTAINLY NOT A DOGMA

Of course Limbo is believed by the Church. We proclaim so in the solemnly defined dogmas of the Apostles Creed when on Holy Saturday Jesus Christ descended into "hell" to release from limbo all the Old Testament figures who anticipated the future coming of the Messiah. This also presumes their children, some of whom were infants when they died, but all of them unbaptized.

Rorate Caeli has an announcement on an upcoming conference on the undefined doctrine of limbo:

The topic of Limbo is of particular importance to those who wish to defend the Catholic tradition, as it has come under particularly strong attack from modern theologians with novel views on grace. If eternal life is really an entirely gratuitous gift of God, which is given only to those who believe in Christ, then what of those who die without Baptism or Divine Faith, but who have never committed actual mortal sin? The overwhelming wight of the witnesses to Tradition is that such persons cannot enter eternal life, but rather enter descend to the underworld, without, however, receiving the punishments of those who died in actual mortal sin. The place of such souls is what has been called “Limbo”. (Cf. Rorate’s previous posts on topic, especially here and here). But modernist theologians, who think that their is a natural desire to enjoy the supernatural gift of the Beatific Vision, and that  therefore Divine Faith in Christ can be implicit in the general intention to do good, claim that God gives eternal life to all such persons. The Dialogos Institute’s Colloquium will thus directly address some of the most important issues in the struggle between Tradition and (neo-)modernism. - See more at: http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2017/04/dialogos-institute-to-hold-colloquium.html#more

THREE CARDINALS, TWO RETIRED, THE OTHER ACTIVE IN THE CURIA, SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH'S POST VATICAN II ABANDONMENT OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH! ARE THEY PROPHETS OR POST VATICAN II REACTIONARIES? I REPORT; YOU DECIDE!

I find a common thread from the statements of three cardinals recently, the most stunning of which is the paper that Robert Cardinal Sarah sent to a conference in Germany on Summorum Pontificum.

What is that common thread you ask? Both an implicit and explicit critique of the "spirit" of Vatican II that has become a "disaster" for the Church.

But more importantly, Cardinal Sarah's paper is a very discreet, but nonetheless dire, critique of the Magisterium of Pope Francis who seems to be promoting the "spirit" of Vatican II with some of his moral initiatives throwing the Church, once again, into the chaotic sea of "spirit" of Vatican II tumult. His Holiness' shake up of the Congregation of Divine Worship, which Cardinal Sarah is its Prefect, as well as Pope Francis' initiative to rethink Vox Clara and Liturgiam Authenticum, seem to be in line with the "spirit" of Vatican II which has been a total disaster for the Church according to Cardinal Sarah!

But let's go in the order of the three Cardinals who have sounded an "implied" alarm. One wonders if these cardinals are simply voices calling out in the wilderness or if there are many other cardinals too timid to speak the truth to power? Time will tell:

The First to speak an implied critique of the current state of affairs in the Church is  from Francis Cardinal Arinze. When asked by CRUX if His Eminence would like to see a future African pope, the good Cardinal's answer in my most humble opinion seems to imply that some cardinals, including Cardinal Arinze now believe that "spirit of Vatican II" has made possible two answers to this famous question which until recently always had only one answer! "Is the Pope Catholic?"

This is what Francis Cardinal Arinze said:

“If he [the pope] doesn’t deliver the goods, what do we gain even if he comes from my own village? For me, it’s not important. What matters is that he’s a Catholic!”

The second to speak, later in the week, DARÍO Cardinal CASTRILLÓN, a retired cardinal from South America who has worked to reintegrate the SSPX, implied that the SSPX may be truer to what the Catholic Church should be compared to the vast majority of the Catholic Church after Vatican II which has embraced the "spirit" of Vatican II, which means a "false spirit."

This is what the good Cardinal says about the post-Vatican II "spirit" of the Council:

"[With Vatican II] There were points without total clarity. Many of the architects of a post-council dealt with those points in a way that was not in line with the Council, which has in itself all its value. They made interpretations that were not in accordance with neither the Council nor the Magisterium."

The third to speak, Robert Cardinal Sarah, current Prefect of the Congregation of Divine Worship delivered a one, two knock out against the spirit of Vatican II. The entire paper delivered in Germany on Friday has this stunning bombshell as it concerns Europe's abandoning of its Catholic roots being SECOND ONLY TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAVING DONE SO FIRST AFTER VATICAN II! Now if that isn't a bombshell statement from a high ranking Cardinal in the Curia, who by the way, is Papabile, I don't know what is!

Here is the bombshell sentence, verbatim, from the good Cardinal:

Political Europe is rebuked for abandoning or denying its Christian roots. But the first to have abandoned her Christian roots and past is indisputably the post-conciliar Catholic Church.

As everyone knows, I am in complete accord with everything Cardinal Sarah wrote in his paper. His is a common sense approach that neutralizes the Liturgy wars but sees the current disaster of the "reformed liturgy" which its reformers deformed, as the foundation of the turmoil in the Church for the past 50 years that has led to moral relativism and the loss of orthodox Catholicism in the majority of clergy and laity in today's Church! There is today, under the current papal magisterium an acceleration of this turmoil which has been recovered.

Cardinal Sarah does not seek to impose the 1962 Roman Missal on the entire Church or to abandon the Vatican II documents, but rather to reorient the reformed Mass to mirror what Sacrosanctum Concilium actually promoted. He states that Pope Paul's committee formed after Vatican II to implement SC went far beyond SC and fabricated a liturgy rather than restoring the Liturgy according to the great organic Tradition of the Liturgy.

As I have written many times before, what our 2002 Roman Missal could look like if reformed already has an official image and that image is found directly in the Ordinariate's Divine Worship, the Missal. All it takes is giving the normal Latin Rite a Missal like Divine Worship which has reoriented the OF Mass to be more similar to the EF Mass although in a "sacral" English. It recovers many elements of the EF Mass that our reformed Mass abandoned recklessly.

Key to the enrichment of our current 2002 Roman Missal with the ethos and spirituality, devotional qualities of the EF 1962 Missal are three of the simplest things to recover which would take minimal catechesis to implement which the Ordinariate's Divine Worship has recovered for us:

1. The 2002 Roman Missal celebrated Ad Orientem without ad libs or additional non-liturgical secular/banal insertions into the Mass by the celebrant such as "good morning church" greetings or other such silly banalities which draw attention not to the sacred but to the priest and his glib personality.

2.    Kneeling for the Penitential Act, Holy Communion, and the Final Blessing as well as receiving Holy Communion on the tongue.

3. Strict laws on what "hymns" can be sung at Mass and cannot be sung which are hymns that are not intrinsic to the Mass. This means that the official Introit, Offertory and Communion Antiphons cannot be eliminated for banal, silly hymns that invite ridicule and embarrassment and are not orthodox in doctrine or Catholic spirituality and devotional content.

By devotional content I mean that devotional Catholic hymns like Panis Angelicus, O Lord, I Am Not Worthy, Hail Holy Queen and the like have a Catholic ethos in sound, albeit devotional, filled with sentimentality and non liturgical. Whereas songs, often sung today at Mass, like Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Just a Closer Walk With Thee and the like, clearly have a Protestant devotional sound that is not appropriate in the Catholic Mass, the sound and sentimentality!

THIS CONFIRMS WHAT WE ALL KNEW: MARRIED CLERGY IS THE ROOT OF PEDOPHILIA IN THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND AT ITS VARIOUS CONCOCTIONS

Church of England implementing new rules to prevent clergy sexual abuse

UNITED KINGDOM
Christian Today
Andy Walton CHRISTIAN TODAY CONTRIBUTING WRITER 31 March 2017
he Church of England has issued a progress report, one year on from the publication of a major report into safeguarding in the Church.
The Elliot Report, issued in 2016, came as a result of investigations into 'the treatment of 'Joe', a victim of clergy sexual abuse. 'Joe' reported that he had disclosed information about the abuse he suffered on several occasions but hadn't received an adequate response.
As a result, a number of measures were put in place, which the Church now says it is implementing fully. These include, 'Strengthening of the training for handling disclosures with a bespoke module for bishops and senior church staff; an independent audit of safeguarding in all dioceses, due to be completed at the end of the year; further plans to work more closely with survivors to learn from their experience.'
At the time the report was received the Church said the Archbishop of Canterbury would ensure that all recommendations were implemented as soon as possible.
