Overall the skilled tone of the vice presidential debate was very edifying. It was good and it was wholesome. I wish these two were the presidential candidates rather than the two clowns we have, one completely uncharitable and the other a cackling, empty headed hen who never lays that egg as Lucy once describe a cackling friend on I Love Lucy, “Marion, stop that cackling, I’m been waiting ten years for you to lay that egg!”
But clearly Senator J.D. Vance’s star shone more brightly than the nervous, self-described knucklehead, who also has lied about his personal life and serving in war and being in China during a major revolt there.
Pope Francis recently said during a high altitude interview that Catholics in the USA have to choose between the lesser of two evils as His Holiness described the anti-life stances of Trump and Harris as it concerns migration and abortion.
As it concerns migration, Pope Francis would prefer the “lesser evil” policies of the Harris-Biden administration for the past three years and not what Trump is proposing in terms of the wall to stop free flowing illegal migration. His Holiness would see Trump’s desire to shut down illegal migration as anti life and certainly would see as anti-life the deportation of illegal migrants especially if it separates family members.
I am not sure how Pope Francis would feel about Harris’ flip flops on migration in order to get votes. These flip-flops in the pope’s eyes would be more evil than her previous stance.
As it concerns abortion, the pope’s words in no way can make the migration issues on an equal plane as how His Holiness describes abortion. He calls it murder and His Holiness recently doubled down on that in another high altitude interview. There is no wiggle room for the pope when it comes to the intrinsic evil of abortion which he says is murder because it is.
While, unfortunately, Vance and Walz aren’t the presidential candidates, the lesser of evils still applies on these two issues. Abortion is always murder and at least one person always dies. We never hear about the number of women who die because of a so-called safe abortion, so in addition to the baby who is murdered, the mother also dies in many cases. At least one person always dies in a horrible way in a safe abortion and sometimes more than one to include the mother and twins, triplets, etc.
I am dismayed that Vance has had to sell his soul to the grotesque immorality of the American people when it comes to the murder of babies. I wish he had promoted good, affordable health care for both the mother and child/children during pregnancy and adoption for any unwanted children.
But Vance’s flip flop on abortion due to political pressure is no where near what Walz is proposing. Walz wants no protection for babies under the mandate of law. He wants the Wildwest where the mother and her doctor decide who will live and die with no interference of law. How flawed and evil is that—it’s intrinsically evil.

I think priests should condemn politicians and catholics who support abortion on demand or just teach the Faith and let the faithful decide.
The calls to condemn Melania Trump and to deny her communion are just deafening, aren’t they?:

Double standards, anyone?
Let me be more direct:
Father McDonald and TJM:
In the past you have both supported the idea that President Joe Biden should be denied Holy Communion because of his public support for abortion rights. For example, only this year you both did so in the following thread (see second and third comments):
http://southernorderspage.blogspot.com/2024/04/wilton-cardinal-gregory-archbishop-of.html
Do you now also support the same idea for Melania Trump, or would you argue, in my view somewhat incredibly, that her case distinguishable in that somehow, although Catholic, she is not a “public figure” like Joe Biden able to cause scandal among the faithful?
TJM:
Does Donald Trump’s recent waffling on the abortion issue, and Melania’s overt and very public support for abortion rights, explain why you now apparently suggest an alternative, i.e., “just teach the Faith and let the faithful decide.” Ironically, this alternative is precisely what I have been advocating (and for which I have been vilified) all these years, suggesting that the guidance for the decision of the faithful is provided by the USCCB document “Faithful Citizenship.” Am I to assume that you (and others such as Sophia) now agree with me? And if so, are we to conclude that this change of position is because the Great Leader (and his wife) have changed the playbook?
And do you now understand why I have never been able to take seriously your protestations about abortion and how Biden’s support for abortion rights disqualifies Catholics from voting Democrat, because as I have consistently believed, Trump has always been acting only opportunistically for purely political gain to dupe Evangelicals and Catholics into voting for him? But now, of course, he sees political advantage in backing off from his previous position (indeed, is Melania’s own public position sincere or in support of the same political strategy?).
In any event, I hope you now see the perils of playing the Abortion card in politics.

Mark J, first of all, she is not allowed to recieve Holy Communion as she is in an illicit marriage. Perhaps Pope Francis has blessed their union, I don’t know, or given her permission to receive Holy Communion based, I don’t know, but according to Canon Law, a person in a public union that resembles marriage but is not recognized by the Church is not allowed to receive Holy Communion. Any Catholic, Melania included, who publicly advocates for abortion, or allowing a person to kill another innocent human being, should not be allowed to receive Holy Communion. This is the local bishop’s call, not an individual priest’s call, though. I’m not sure what the canon law is on a Catholic giving scandal by advocating that others have a right to choose to kill an innocent human being. Maybe someone can enlighten us.
TJM, when you insult people on this blog or use language that your first grade sister would smack your nuckels with a ruler, I will not post your comment. Stop being sophomoric and insulting and I will publish your comments that comport to my policies and are about the post I have written.
I should also say, that while Melania is excluded from receiving Holy Communion due to her invalid marriage to Donald Trump, advocating for women to choose to murder their unwanted infant in her womb with no laws to protect that innocent victim, is a more serious moral issue than living in sin through an invalid marriage. Just say….

Father McDonald:
Thank you for your responses. I was wondering about Melania’s marriage situation too this morning before I read your responses. She and Donald were married in an Episcopal church, and it seems unclear when she became Catholic, with some sources suggesting her father had her secretly baptized as a Catholic as a child and others suggesting it was only after her marriage to Donald. In any event, all the sources seem to agree that she is a practicing Catholic, which I assume means she attends Mass. It would be interesting to know what Archbishop Cordileone thinks about the matter.
