BOMBSHELL, POPE FRANCIS IN A MAJOR REVERSAL ALLOWS AFRICAN BISHOPS TO FORBID BLESSING COUPLES LIVING IN IMMORAL OR UNNATURAL SEXUAL UNIONS

Well, this is interesting damage control And it is from Vatican News! Of course in the 1970’s theologians and some bishops were suggesting that various nations could adopt various doctrinal and moral positions even if other countries chose not to do so. For example, they felt that even in the 1970’s, North America was ready for female ordinations but Africa wasn’t. The solution was to allow countries ready for it to do it and others not ready for it to not do it.

Since we are in the 1970’s again, I wonder if this is what is happening and will there be more to come, for example, women’s ordination for some but not for others depending on readiness?

Time will tell. I guess I am voicing what so many Catholics are feeling, cynicism about the current leadership of the Church.

African Church ‘in communion with Pope’ but no blessing of same-sex couples

Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, president of SECAM, says the African Churches will continue to reflect on ‘Fiducia supplicans,’ while reaffirming their “unwavering communion with Pope Francis” and highlighting the freedom of each Bishop in their own Diocese.

By Salvatore Cernuzio—Vatican News!

“The Episcopal Conferences across Africa, which have strongly reaffirmed their communion with Pope Francis, believe that the extra-liturgical blessings proposed in the Declaration Fiducia supplicans cannot be carried out in Africa without exposing themselves to scandals.”

Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa and President of SECAM (Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar), has published a letter stating the position of African Bishops regarding the “extra-liturgical” blessings proposed in the Declaration of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Fiducia supplicans, published on 18 December, opens the possibility of blessing couples in “irregular” situations, according to Catholic morality, including same-sex couples, though the blessing must be performed outside any form of liturgical rite and never in imitation of a wedding.

Cardinal Ambongo’s letter, released on Thursday, presents a “consolidated summary” of the positions adopted by various National and Inter-territorial Episcopal Conferences across the African continent on the Declaration.

According to the letter, Fiducia supplicans caused “a shockwave” and has “sown misconceptions and unrest in the minds of many lay faithful, consecrated persons, and even pastors, and has aroused strong reactions.”

Cardinal Ambongo specifies that the letter has received “the agreement of His Holiness Pope Francis and of His Eminence Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.”

He clarified that the Bishops of Africa and Madagascar reaffirm their communion with Pope Francis. “In their various messages, the Episcopal Conferences of the Church family of God in Africa begin by reaffirming their unwavering attachment to the Successor of Peter, their communion with him, and their fidelity to the Gospel.”

However, said Cardinal Ambongo, the Bishops believe that scandal would result from the blessings of same-sex couples, even if performed outside of liturgical frameworks.

“The Episcopal Conferences generally prefer – each Bishop remaining free in his diocese – not to offer blessings to same-sex couples,” said Cardinal Ambongo, adding that the practice could lead to potential confusion and scandal.

Speaking to the clergy, religious communities, and all believers, Cardinal Ambongo points out that Fiducia supplicans clearly emphasizes that “the Church’s doctrine on Christian marriage and sexuality remains unchanged.”

“For this reason, we, the African Bishops, do not consider it appropriate for Africa to bless homosexual unions or same-sex couples because, in our context, this would cause confusion and would be in direct contradiction to the cultural ethos of African communities,” he said. “The language of Fiducia supplicans remains too subtle for simple people to understand. Furthermore, it remains very difficult to be convincing that people of the same sex who live in a stable union do not claim the legitimacy of their own status.”

At the same time, the Church in Africa reaffirms its “commitment to continuing pastoral assistance to all its members.”

Cardinal Ambongo said clergy are “encouraged to provide welcoming and supportive pastoral care, particularly to couples in irregular situations.”

“The African Bishops’ Conferences emphasize that people with a homosexual tendency must be treated with respect and dignity, while reminding them that unions of persons of the same-sex are contrary to the will of God and therefore cannot receive the blessing of the Church,” said the Cardinal.

He noted that the Church has constantly taught that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to natural law.”

“Some countries prefer to have more time for the deepening of the Declaration which, in fact, offers the possibility of these blessings but does not impose them,” he said. “In any case, we will continue to reflect on the value of the general theme of this document, apart from just blessings for couples in an irregular situation, that is to say, on the richness of spontaneous blessings in everyday pastoral care.”

In conclusion, Cardinal Ambongo urges Christians communities “not to allow themselves to be shaken.”

Pope Francis, he noted, “fiercely opposed to any form of cultural colonization in Africa, blesses the African people with all his heart and encourages them to remain faithful, as always, to the defense of Christian values.”

Hegemony. The Vatican retracts nothing and even scores a point with Cardinal Ambongo’s concession that the the Church will not conduct cultural colonization by forcing this blasphemy on Africa, thereby conceding all the Western world to sodomy.

I see the hand of the Holy Ghost at work in regard to the serene relationship between Pope Francis and the holy bishops of Africa.

It has been unfortunate that from late last month to date, certain folks have promoted the following notion: The Church in Africa is at war against Pope Francis. The bishops in Africa have rejected as "heretical" Pope Francis' Fiducia Supplicans.

Said folks had pitted the African bishops against Pope Francis.

But in holy, peaceful fashion, the bishops in Africa reiterated today their "unwavering" "communion" with Pope Francis.

The document from the Episcopal Conferences throughout Africa declared that Fiducia Supplicans has made it clear that the "Church's doctrine on Christian marriage and sexuality remains unchanged."

The document stated that Pope Francis is "fiercely opposed to any form of cultural colonization in Africa, blesses the African people with all his heart, and encourages them to remain faithful, as always, to the defense of Christian values."

Rome and the Church in Africa are in communion and peace with each other. The Holy Ghost has seen to that.

Father McDonald, I have not discerned today on Rome's part any notion of reversal or "damage control" in regard to how Fiducia Supplicans relates to the Church in Africa.

Rome last month had made the following clear:

From: National Catholic Register:

-- Cardinal Fernández: ‘It’s Proper for Each Bishop’ to Discern Application of Fiducia Supplicans

The prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, commenting on the reluctance expressed by individual bishops and bishops’ conferences regarding the declaration Fiducia Supplicans, stated that “it’s proper for each local bishop to make that discernment.”

Especially in Africa, where “there is legislation that penalizes with prison the mere fact of declaring oneself to be gay, imagine [what a] a blessing [would do],” the DDF doctrinal chief said, adding that “it’s proper for each local bishop to make that discernment in his diocese or in any case, to give further guidance.”

The SECAM (Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) letter has made clear the following:

-- The bishops in Africa remain in "unwavering" communion with Pope Francis.

-- Fiducia Supplicans has guaranteed that the "Church's doctrine on Christian marriage and sexuality remains unchanged."

-- The Ordinary of each diocese throughout Africa and Madagascar is free to permit the blessings in question.

-- The SECAM letter declared that "some countries prefer to have more time for the deepening of the Declaration, which, in fact, offers the possibility of these blessings but does not impose them."

-- The SECAM letter stated that bishops in Africa "will continue to reflect on the value of the general theme of this document, apart from just blessing for couples in an irregular situation, that is to say, on the richness of spontaneous blessings in everyday pastoral care."

So the Pope allows bishops to decide - what a novel concept. If only our stuck in the 70s Pontiff would rediscover the 70s version of collegiality. Then apply it to the liturgy as well.

Fr. Allan J. McDonald said...

Monkmcg: You name the cognitive dissonance here. First of all, no one that I know of was asking for a novel theology and directives on informal blessings. I have never thought about or have been asked by homosexual couples for a blessing as a couple. I have blessed all kinds of people, sinners, saints and non-believers. God’s blessings are always perfect, pure and holy and in no way confirms a person in their unbelief or immoral lifestyle and sin is never blessed, nor the appearance of blessing sin.

We did not need the section in FS on the novel formalizing of informal blessings. We need an enclical to uphold the good part of FS and condemn lgbtq+++ ideologies, multilation of the bodies of children and adults as well as their mental wellness.

And yes, bishops and priests should not be micromanaged when celebrating the Mass in either form and whatever language to the extent of telling priests they can’t advertise in their bulletin a regularly scheduled Mass.

Card. Fernandez, Dec. 18, 2023: There will be no further guidance or explanations. Specific words or blessing formulae should not be provided to priests.

Card. Fernandez, as of Jan. 12, 2024: Here are three further explanations (interviews, press releases, etc.) Also, here's a specific example of how to conduct a blessing, down to the words, the time limit (neither less than 10 seconds nor more than 15, of course), and how many signs of the cross to make.

Nope, not a scintilla of damage control going on here.

Soon after Rome had issued Fiducia Supplicans, The Pillar had asked Cardinal Fernández about the part of FS that stated that "no further responses should be expected..."

The Pillar: "Does that mean that there will not be any response..."

Cardinal Fernández: "No, it means that one should not expect a manual, a vademecum, or a guide for something so simple...we are currently discussing these issues with presidents of bishops’ conferences and with groups of bishops visiting the dicastery."

"Soon, a group of dicastery prefects will begin a journey of conversion and deepening with the German bishops and we will make all the necessary clarifications."

"Moreover, I am planning a trip to Germany to have some conversations that I believe are important."

======

Cardinal Fernández had made it clear that beyond a manual/vademecum, we were to expect additional responses from Rome.

Within a month of publication of FS, Card. Fernandez provided the "guide" for something "so simple" that we said we should not expect. Oh well, maybe the next DDF head will be better.

Fiducia whatchamacallit is the awesomest, bestest thing EVER! Pope Francis approves, and it's just peachy keen, and anyone who says otherwise is just like those trad kill-joys, the cause of all troubles.

African Bishops:

Fiducia is a terrible idea and we want nothing to do with it.

While Mark is assembling an impressive collection of long quotes to give those pesky African bishops what-for, Pope Francis says,

Maybe the African bishops have a point. *Shrug.*

Mark's new line:

Fiducia Supplucia is awesome wherever it's awesome, and wherever it's not, it's not! And Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia!

Serious point to Mark:

It's a mess. You're not a bad Catholic, or bad friend to Pope Francis, admitting as much.

The reason Father McDonald is laughing, and I'm kidding, is because you seem to be about the last person on the globe who insists, regarding the state of this papacy, What mess? Everything is awesome!

Indeed, a good friend intervenes to help his friend know when he's making a mess of things. Not that any of us have the direct ear of the Holy Father, but -- perhaps word will reach him eventually.

You would have more credibility if you didn't wear glasses tinted so deeply rose.

Bishop Mtumbuka: Fiducia Supplicans “looks to us like a heresy; it reads like a heresy; and its effects a heresy.”

Also: "Forget and ignore this controversial and apparently blasphemous declaration in its entirety.”
