That is Democrat, not "small d" democrat. You know, the proper name thing?!?
Politics is the real religion of many, probably most Americans. Think how many people would become more angry at being told, "I would never consider voting for your party," than being told, "I would never consider worshiping with you." Also notice how people are more willing to change churches or even religions than to change political party or even favorite sports team.
