The ferula (papal staff) Benedict had in 2009 was actually Pius IX's ferula. It is the nicest one of the three that have been in use since the invention of photography.http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturgy/details/ns_lit_doc_20091117_ferula_en.html
I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I remember hearing when Pope Benedict switched to that staff, that it was because it was less heavy than the other one.
The Tortured Christ is such a hideous ferula.
