BISHOP DAVID M. O'CONNELL HITS THE BALL OUT OF THE PARK! BEAUTY, REVERENCE, SPLENDOR AND AWE--JUST WHAT EVERY CATHOLIC MASS SHOULD HAVE, BAR NONE!

From the Diocese of Trenton's newspaper, The Monitor: The beauty, reverence, splendor and awe of a traditional Latin Mass was reflected in its highest form in the Diocese of Trenton Nov. 27 as Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., celebrated a Solemn Pontifical High Mass in St. Hedwig Church, Trenton.

The Cappa Magna will really drive some to tears! God is good!

Look at that biretta, eh, Father? ;)

That's perhaps the finest photo album ever, of a TLM. And here is the link to the complete article:

Something like this fills me with optimism for the future, expecially all those boys and girls. Theirs is the face of the future of the Church, Deo gratias.

Anonymous,
Yeah, the bishop actually got to wear TWO hats as a part of this Mass (episcopal biretta and then mitre)! So much for being concerned about messing up any remaining hair on this head . .

I also liked seeing the use of episcopal gloves and the Roman chasuble in the OF!

My cousin is receiving Communion in photo #64 :-P

They said it was an amazing Mass, and watching the Bishop walk in 30 minutes before Mass with the Cappa Magna was so powerful!

Maybe we'll have a Pontifical Mass one day?

Actually, he wore two mitres--the golden mitre and the precious mitre--at different points in the Mass, as specified by the rubrics for the pontifical Mass.

I wonder how many of our bishops have both a golden mitre and a precious mitre, as opposed to the shortie semi-mitre that so many of them wear, presumably to show that they're embarrassed to wear a mitre at all, and embarrassing anyone present who knows what a real mitre looks like.

So, he actually wore THREE hats (a biretta and two mitres).

I meant to say earlier that I like to see some of these things (birettas, episcopal gloves and Roman chasubles) in the OF context as well as in the EF (as happened in the EF Mass referenced here). And I KNOW that many (like my older female choir colleague) don't like Latin in the OF as well but it obviously has a rightful place in either form of the Roman Rite.

It is worthy of note that Bishop O'Connell frequently wears the biretta outside of Mass. He is also known for frequently appearing at parish functions in cassock, fascia and biretta, as opposed to a clerical suit.

?_? AFAIK, bishops are not supposed to wear birettas with their cassocks, only with choir dress and when celebrating Mass not solemnly.
