SAINT IGNATIOS OF ANTIOCH MELKITE RITE PARISH IN AUGUSTA, GEORGIA

Saint Ignatios Melkite Catholic Church, Augusta, GA, just two hours east of Macon--interior shot and deacon ordination:

Augusta Georgia has a small Melkite Rite parish and you can visit its website by pressing here. Their Church is in a former small Methodist Church, but you wouldn't know that by looking at it today. Quite stunning and in a poor Augusta neighborhood not far from downtown and situated near the Medical College of Georgia, which was renamed three years ago, Georgia Health Sciences University and renamed just recently but not yet officially, Georgia Regents University, I mean, Georgia Regents University, Augusta.

They have nice vestments. Some of the trim reminds me of older Roman rite vestments. Why is it that the Eastern Rites and the Orthodox tend to stick to more traditional looking vestments (in styles often distinctive to their rites) whereas in the Roman Rite we have seen (and still see) more "contemporary" styles (polyester, often with no ornamentation or with modernistic symbols) along with some more traditional styles. In other words, why aren't the Roman Rite vestment styles more uniformly made of materials and trim that are more traditional as we routinely see in the Eastern (and Orthodox) Rites?

In pre-Conciliar days one could say this about the vestments used in the Roman Rite (that they were made of beautiful natural fabrics and had more ornamentation and trimming as with the Eastern Rite vestments). I know it's a minor external but that doesn't keep me from wanting to ask and from being somewhat jealous of them in the meantime!

Joseph, because we Latin Catholics are afraid of our own traditions. Effectively, our identity crisis is so severe that it retards our own worship.

There's another Melkite church in Georgia:

St. John Chrysostom Melkite Church
1428 Ponce de Leon Ave., NE
Atlanta, GA 30307.

www.stjohnmelkite.org

Purchased by the Melkite community, it was the former
mansion of the Coca Cola magnate, Asa Candler.

It also houses the Vocation Office of the Melkite Eparchy.
