POPE FRANCIS MEETS WITH FRENCH BISHOPS IN A WAY THAT PREVENTS CONTAGION

Being in a tight circle, holding hands and singing Kumbaya, is now seen at papal meetings to be a relic of the past in the coronavirus age:

Pope Francis met with the French bishops on their "ad limina" visits, but the chairs were set one meter apart to prevent spread of

Was it Pope Clement VI that had a bon fire built to encircle him during an audience in the time of the Black Plague? In any case, I am not sure a meter is enough. Humidity control would help a lot.

Just read yesterday a report on a scientific study done about the COVID-19 virus that said, "It can be confirmed that in a closed environment with air-conditioning, the transmission distance of the new coronavirus will exceed the commonly recognized safe distance," the researchers wrote in their paper, published in peer-reviewed journal, Practical Preventive Medicine."

"Their work was based on a local outbreak case on January 22 during the peak Lunar New Year travel season. A passenger, known as “A”, boarded a fully booked long-distance coach and settled down on the second row from the back."

"Because China requires closed circuit television cameras to record all long-distance us rides, researchers were able to reconstruct the spread of the virus on the bus, which had no open windows."

"Lead author Hu Shixiong said that the camera footage revealed patient "A" did not interact with anyone throughout the four-hour ride, yet the virus infected seven other passengers by the time the bus stopped at the next city. Infected passengers included not only those sitting relatively close to "patient zero," but people six rows away - or 4.5 meters (14.76 feet)."

Doesn't look like that 1 meter distance is going to cut it. :-)

God bless.

Bee,
I read on-line that the report you cite has been withdrawn. The reasons were not stated, so it may reappear with editorial modifications. Right now its conclusions are up in the air.

Since I didn't read the original report, I had a lot of questions too, such as how did they determine with certainty that no one on the bus already was infected but not showing symptoms? How did they know the others were definitely infected by person "A"? Also, how did they determine person "A" did not transmit the virus onto the seat or surrounding hard surfaces as he passed the seats in front to take his seat in the rear, either by touching them or coughing as he passed?

Thanks for letting me know the article was withdrawn.

God bless.

I will put on my FrMJK hat and point out that the person could have infected other rows of seats merely passing by (touch, etc) or have interacted before getting on the bus. It is also possible that the other people could have gotten it from another source.

I think that was speculation and, in the case the Chinese Government, scapegoating. They are going to blame that person as an example for others that don’t follow their rules.
